Interview with Infinity Mind at Sunday 28th of April 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? IM: Traditional folk culture, is derived from daily and spiritual needs of the mass. The reason of folk culture endangerment lies in the loss of its original living needs and significance, as well as its separation from folk life. Breaking through the boundary of materials and exploring the modern form of traditional folk art, Infinity Mind extracted the gaskets discarded after firing process of Yingjing's black earthenware, and use them as the main decoration element in Chuan's Kitchen II. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? IM: Guangzhou ABO Sunny Walk Restaurant Co., Ltd. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? IM: Chuan's Kitchen II, an experimental restaurant that takes both the Sichuan Yingjing's black earthenware and mined soil materials from metro construction as the medium, is an innovative combination of modern commercial space and culture of Sichuan cuisine, carrying on the contemporary re-creation of traditional folk art and farming civilization. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? IM: These gaskets are used to separate the coal and greenware during the firing process then discarded in the wild after repeated use of seven or eight times. It takes time to recycle and process to find a suitable wasted gasket. Using the recycled waste materials from Guangzhou metro construction, designersapplied ancient rammed earth building technique and modern integrated casting technique, the degradable tiles retain the simple and natural texture of soil.
