Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Aldo Petruzzelli (AP) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Aldo Petruzzelli by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Teresa here.

Interview with Aldo Petruzzelli at Sunday 2nd of June 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AP: I wanted to pay homage to all the greatest designers that came before me. I'm referring to all the Italian masters as I consider myself a worthy heir of them.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AP: The chair is made entirely out of wood therefore the greatest aspect to be maintained was the faithful reproduction from the project to wood.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AP: I hope to sell it, I have no preference on who I want to sell it to as long as it'll be truly understood the values it stands for as well as the fact it won't be my only award-winning piece. That's just the beginning.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AP: To design it on paper a month it's all the process to make it a reality that is time-consuming and it took me more than 4. Also because I had to control the carpenter at distance in the early stages, I was in the States for school.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AP: As for almost the objects I have in my portfolio they are all school prompts or at least they were. I always go over the top by developing the little concepts we bake in the class and create finished beautiful products.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AP: I wish I could produce it myself, not now and for sure not this year. I'm willing to either lease the production rights or sell it and earn it through royalties. As of now the chair is on a Spanish startup site ready looking for a manufacturer but that can change.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AP: The will to promote myself as the perfect heir of the Italian masters that will finally enter the 21st century design by completely pivoting my focus on other kind of designs.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
AP: My design professor was undoubtedly an influence for this kind of work. He helped me refine some details I would have otherwise missed and some advice on how to make it didn't come to arrive either.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AP: A person who appreciates the hard work that goes into making this kind of chair. A person that likes having high-end wood piece in his house. The skillfulness required to make this quality isn't indifferent.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AP: Well it is designed by a high school student doesn't that attract?

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
AP: It is named after my mother. It couldn't have been otherwise. Sleek yet with a traditional look to it.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
AP: I work with a wide range of tools from pencil to computers. I made the technical drawing and then model the profile of the chair on Autocad to create files ready for the CNC.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
AP: It creates design by being alone in a room. It stands by itself.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
AP: Yes I worked with one of the greatest carpenter in my city whom I'm deeply grateful for.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
AP: The initial technology used is CNC for cutting the piece then the elbow grease of the carpenter did the rest of the job.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
AP: I researched the chairs design that made history not to copy from them but to not copy. That's what every designer should do nowadays.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
AP: I didn't know where to start that's why at the beginning when you don't know anybody it's better to ask someone who you trust. This isn't only for starters though.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
AP: I actually received an e-mail from one of the A' Design Award commissioner who invited me to submit Teresa.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
AP: There's a saying in the design world that goes like this: "if you can design a chair you can design everything" the chair isn't perfect but up until now that saying is proving to be spot on.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
AP: Yes keep an eye on my portfolio, great projects are coming soon (not in the furniture category) and as I said I get better project by project it is something I must do. You can check my bechance and ask me for commissions. Thanks

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
