Interview with Chris Herbold at Monday 21st of October 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CH: The combination of traditional materials and innovative lighting technology leads to a special product experience with three dimensional light effects.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CH: The product should cause enthusiasm and wonder at the user.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CH: We will expand the Estelle family of luminaires with other variants but also use the technology for other families of luminaires with different look and feel.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CH: The Estelle family of smart luminaires was a way of about two years as there was development of hard- and software that goes together with the product design.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CH: The inspiration came from the technology and my idea was to develop a design that makes the most of this technology.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CH: The Estelle luminaires are produced by vanory, our own company.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
CH: The innovative technology that excites people.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
CH: As in all my other projects, many people were involved who have given feedback on drafting and have helped that in the end everything fits together perfectly.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CH: End users that

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CH: End users who want the perfect mood lighting in the home, but also professional users, for example, in restaurants or hotels.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CH: The name Estelle was chosen because the design of the lighting effects reminds of stars.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
CH: Pen and paper, later also CAD and virtual models. The 3D printer also helps us a lot to consider all the details in product development.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CH: The combination of traditional materials like glass and innovative technology for stunning light effects that bring endless possibilities to create the perfect mood in the room.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
CH: The vanory team includes specialists in many areas of engineering, but we also work with external specialists who guarantee the high quality of the materials and components used.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CH: The technology used plays a crucial role. It is the basis for the concept and the starting point for the design.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CH: In this design, we have worked with numerical simulations and ray tracing to develop the design as best as possible.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
CH: We had to look for many solutions to technical problems, as the technology used is not normally used in this type of product.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
CH: We have received a lot of positive feedback on the product and believe in its success. Therefore it was an easy decision for us to participate in this international design competition.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
CH: This process has been a constant improvement. Specifically, because of the technology we have used, we have learned a lot to improve the smallest details so that the entire design can be successful.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
CH: If you have any other question about Estelle family of smart luminaires or about vanory, just write me an email. I look forward to your feedback.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
