Interview with Nicholas Kenton Lui at Tuesday 22nd of October 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
NL: Kaleidoscope is the main principle and inspiration behind the design. As we all know, a kaleidoscope converts a simple shape to a complex yet fruitful image. Therefore, I used kaleidoscope as the base of the design for this start-up driven program, meaning that a simple innovation can become much more useful and wonderful to our life and our society.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
NL: My main focus of the design is to achieve the concept of "Innovation meets tradition". As my client is a company with 150 years of history, therefore this mentorship program is actually their very first time to be more innovative and closer to technology, applying technology in luxury, traditional hospitality. Therefore, the logo tends to be more contemporary by using simple geometric shapes, but keeping it gorgeous with the gold colors and serif font.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
NL: To be honest, I do not expect myself to win this award, as it is my very first time participating in this kind of big design competition. I simply want to know how good/bad I am so far since I started designing a few years ago. Therefore, with this award-winning design, I hope my client can be proud of this mentorship program, and keep going to connect traditions with technology.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
NL: It takes me around one-weel in total to figure out this concept and complete the design.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
NL: This design was commissioned for a startup-driven mentorship program Kaleidoscope Lab. Therefore, I started thinking from the characteristics of a kaleidoscope. Keeping it simple and contemporary to make it looking and feeling younger, with a little touch from the traditional-style design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
NL: This design is now being used by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, the owner of the Peninsula Hotels. I am very proud to have them using my design as their first startup-driven mentorship program. It created much noises among all startups in Hong Kong and it was definitely a success.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
NL: I think it is interesting to design stuff for a company with a long history, especially this company with 150 years of history. People might think that they are always being old-fashioned, so everything looks old and bad. However, it is exciting that they are trying to connect with the younger generation, and try to keep up with the trend but still emphasizing on heritage in hospitality. Therefore, I feel honored to design a young brand for their mentorship program to show their ambition by combining technology into their traditional hotels.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
NL: Young startups who are interested in luxury and hospitality market.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
NL: I believe the mix of 'luxury' and 'innovation' makes this design to stand out. As you know, these two concepts are rarely putting together, people usually just link 'innovation' with 'expensive'. Therefore, the design emphasizes on luxury can be innovative too, unlike other startup mentorship programs, simply being young and energetic.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
NL: Kaleidoscope Lab, this name is named by my client. Simply just referring that innovations are as colorful and unpredictable as a kaleidoscope. You never know what kind of images it will create at the end. Something simple can become something much more useful and wonderful, with a big impact to us.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
NL: Adobe Illustrator.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
NL: I think 'heritage' is the most unique aspect of my design. Although the design is trying to be young and innovative, it still keeps some traditional elements to do a small touch on the design, such as the serif font, fleur-de-lis, etc.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
NL: I work on this design on my own.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
NL: Visualizing the design, and do a luxury touch on the brochure design with hot stamping.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
NL: Not much. I simply based on the design elements from the client's brand, and using them as a final touch to make the logo more aligned and connected with the traditional company.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
NL: Finding the balance between contemporary and traditional. As traditional design includes a lot of decorative elements, while contemporary design keeps everything simple. Therefore the contradiction between two styles creates most of the challenges for me to deal with this design.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
NL: I was thinking it was a good chance for me to see how good/bad I am in the world. Moreover, my client supports me to try with this design, believing that this design is a signature of change of their company.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
NL: Trying to think more creatively and in more perspectives. Researching on more traditional work and see how can I apply traditional art style to make the design more meaningful and interesting by collaborating with contemporary elements.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
