Interview with ่Juti Klipbua at Thursday 16th of May 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
àK: Tropical climate context of Samui island and the Holy Bible relating to holy Annunciation of Mary.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
àK: To create form that attract tourist and reflex the glorify Lord. To bring pride and bound to local catholic community. To create space that can capture the natural light without effect comfort zone of user in the building.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
àK: Design more and hope I have chance to be a guest lecturer for young architects or architect student

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
àK: 6 month

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
àK: Inspired from the church name from the client since the first time.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
àK: no

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
àK: I try to find the minimalist architecture that still can reflex human ambition or represent some thing that can full fill our soul.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
àK: Must be many that I learnt from see or visit their project. Its all in my memory.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
àK: local catholic and tourist in Samui island

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
àK: Their are many minimal architecture and many church that metaphor from the bible. But not much combine both.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
àK: Its been given by the Bishop of Surathani.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
àK: hand sketch, autocad, 3ds max

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
àK: Minimal architecture that still link to Traditional Thai architecture and Traditional church in the Modern language.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
àK: Engineer, Sqn.Ldr. Ronayutt Vongmanee Contractor, Home base construction Panotech, Light weight insulation wall NAP Paint, Self cleaning coat guard

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
àK: To achieve the minimal look of curve wall and reduce the heat inside the building, Light weight insulation wall by Panotech was used in this building. Insulation wall help on insulated the building, less energy consumption. Lighter weight on insulated watt that cast on site wall, help structure to be more simplify on cost and easier installation. Self cleaning coat guard of Exterior wall help reduce maintenance cost of the building and protect building skin from the salty wind from the sea.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
àK: Bible, Raining ratio, and sun direction ration data.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
àK: To construct in a limit budget.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
àK: There are many magazine contract for publication, so I think it might be good to publish to international scene.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
àK: To be patient and have faith.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
àK: No
