Interview with Cao Qi at Thursday 28th of March 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? CC: The whole space seeks simplicity and natural immersive experiences. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? CC: The merging with Chinese traditional architecture reveals the historical testimony of China Inland Mission across centuries and also the succeeding evangelical vision in the future. Such a memorial hall is unique in Mainland China and is of the greatest significance. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? CC: There are other aspects of project design that are continuing, and we look forward to better performance in the future. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? CC: It takes three months from research to clear design concepts. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? CC: More or less have their own perseverance. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? CC: The implementation part is completed by the service provider. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? CC: This is the first exhibition hall with the theme of missions and missionaries in Mainland China. It is also a historical testimony of the missionaries of the China Inland Mission in the past 150 years. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? CC: I wish All people. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? CC: The ceiling of the lobby and exhibition hall follows the traditional Chinese built structure. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? CC: SketchUp,AutoCAD. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? CC: Of course, we have a professional team. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? CC: Available budget and time. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? CC: Expect the design of similar theme to be understood and recognized by everyone. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? CC: Effective communication is very important.
