| Interview with Ho Kuan Teck at Monday 30th of December 2024 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? KH: The main principle is achieving balance and harmony through minimalist design. The inspiration stems from the infinity symbol, which represents eternity, and the simplicity of geometric shapes. The bag embodies modern elegance and reflects a luxurious yet minimalist lifestyle. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? KH: The focus was on creating a versatile, functional, and aesthetically pleasing handbag that aligns with minimalist fashion trends. I wanted to achieve a design that resonates with modern lifestyles while maintaining timeless elegance. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? KH: I plan to continue showcasing the Lemniscate handbag in fashion exhibitions and online platforms. There is also potential to expand this design into a series with variations in color and material, catering to different preferences. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? KH: The entire design and production process took 1.5 months, with the final product completed in May 2018. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? KH: This design was a personal project inspired by my passion for minimalist aesthetics and the infinity symbol. It was not commissioned but driven by the desire to blend symbolism and functionality in a handbag. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? KH: The Lemniscate handbag is exclusively produced under my brand, Myura. There are no current plans to sell or lease production rights. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? KH: I wanted to create a handbag that emphasizes balance and simplicity, reflecting a modern lifestyle. The idea of integrating the infinity symbol into the design adds a meaningful and distinctive touch. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? KH: This was entirely my own work. I conceptualized and executed the design without influence or collaboration from other designers. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? KH: The target customers are individuals who appreciate minimalist fashion and high-quality craftsmanship. They value functional yet stylish handbags that complement both day and night outfits. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? KH: The unique integration of the infinity symbol as the handle and the minimalist geometric shape distinguish this design. The careful craftsmanship and premium materials further elevate its appeal. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? KH: The name "Lemniscate" is derived from the mathematical term for the infinity symbol (∞), which represents eternity and harmony. It perfectly encapsulates the essence of the design. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? KH: The project involved a combination of traditional sketching and physical mock-ups to refine the structure and handle design. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? KH: The most unique aspect is the incorporation of the infinity symbol into the bag handle, which not only serves as a functional element but also carries symbolic meaning, representing eternity and balance. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? KH: This was a solo project. I handled every aspect of the design, from conceptualization to realization, using my skills in leather crafting and design. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? KH: Traditional techniques played a major role in the production process. While modern tools were used for precision in cutting and assembly, the craftsmanship relied on traditional methods to achieve the desired softness and shape. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? KH: The design is influenced by a study of geometric shapes and their compatibility with human interaction. Research into minimalist trends and consumer preferences also guided the creation of the bag. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? KH: The primary challenge was achieving the perfect twist in the infinity symbol handle while maintaining its structural integrity. Finding the right angle required multiple trials and was a significant breakthrough in the process. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? KH: I wanted to share the uniqueness of the Lemniscate handbag with a global audience and gain recognition for its innovative yet minimalist design approach. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? KH: This project deepened my understanding of balance in design and the importance of precise execution. It also reinforced the value of perseverance when facing technical challenges. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? KH: The Lemniscate handbag is not just a fashion accessory; it’s a statement of harmony and elegance. It showcases how simplicity can be powerful and timeless in design.
