Home > Winners > Design #67714 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer MM Group Consulting Engineers (MA) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of MM Group Consulting Engineers by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Euphoria here.

Interview with MM Group Consulting Engineers at Wednesday 17th of April 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MA: Seeking references from local architecture, the design team selected lines and materials that reflect the architectural features of the city of Chania. The forms are inspired by the old Venetian town and harbor of Chania, especially the Venetian dockyards with their characteristic domes and triangular ends of the facades and an attempt was made to implement them in a modern way. Thus, the central building is housed with a dome and the selected colors and lighting fixtures used, create an atmosphere that reflects the interior of the Venetian dockyards, while the columned, arched facades in the spa building, creates the impression of an array of dockyards resembling the ones found in the waterfront of the Venetian harbor of Chania.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MA: The design of the project began in spring 2014. The required building permits were issued in June 2016 and soon after that, the construction of the project started. The construction lasted 18 months and finished in May 2018.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MA: The design was made for a client of ours, EM Resorts, based in Chania, Crete.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MA: Euphoria Resort is a family-oriented hotel, specially designed for families with children.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MA: Euphoria is a word of Greek origin. It means joy, a state of wellness and promotes the owner's philosophy. EM Resorts aim to create that “memory of joy” in every interaction with the guests.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MA: Autocad Architecture, SketchUp, Lumion

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MA: For the realization of this project MM Group's design team collaborated with structural engineer Kostas Koskinas, as well as interior designer Georgios Chresohow. The design team also worked together with experienced professionals in choosing the best design solutions regarding the individual hotel departments, such as the spa, restaurant and bar equipment, the waterpark installation etc.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MA: The use of technology in order to develop innovative solutions in terms of functionality and to enhance the building energy efficiency, was one of the design team's goals. A geothermal air conditioning system with a total cooling capacity of about 1 MW was installed, with very high efficiency by exploiting the heat of pumped groundwater from drilling. This was combined with Domestic Hot Water production which it is achieved with minimal energy cost by using the discarted heat from the air conditioning system. Both air conditioning and hot water systems are connected to a central electronic control and management system (BMS) that enables all system operating information to be received anytime, as well as remote operation. Finally, two autonomous photovoltaic fields were implemented to generate electricity of 220kW.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
