Interview with Jay Qian at Wednesday 30th of May 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JQ: This project is totally inspired by nature. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JQ: The project is focused on the safety of cyclists in urban traffic. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JQ: Find a partner to mass produce. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JQ: I spent almost 4 months designing this helmet. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JQ: This project was the initial idea of the biomimicry class in my school. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JQ: Find a partner to mass produce. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JQ: The love for nature. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JQ: No FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JQ: The cyclists in urban traffic. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JQ: Unlike other products using the electric bulb, Morpho Helmet has a unique style. It does not need any electricity to activate which inspired by the structural color of the wings of Morpho Butterfly. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JQ: The main idea was inspired by the structural color of the wings of Morpho Butterfly. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JQ: I had lots of 3D-printing prototypes to test whether it works. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JQ: The way it flashes! FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JQ: No FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JQ: The material and optical anger of the light. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JQ: I had lots of 3D-printing prototypes to test how it works. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JQ: the reflection of the light on the surface is hard to control. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JQ: A Design Award is quite famous and it is a good opportunity for me to promote if I could win. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JQ: The method of research of the biomimicry is quite important.
