Cityways Data Visualization by Hyemi Song

Home > Winners > Design #67565 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Hyemi Song (HS) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Hyemi Song by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design CityWays here.

Interview with Hyemi Song at Thursday 3rd of May 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
HS: Currently, fitness tracking applications are present in 60% of smartphones, and constitute a rapidly growing market, with sales of $800 million projected by 2020. They are also behind many ad-hoc devices, such as fitness electronic gear contained in watches and bracelets, among others. While the individual benefits of such apps are well known, the aggregated data they produce has never been studied to better understand cities – at least until now. So, with movement data from self-tracking applications, the interactive data visualization, CityWays was started to better understand activity patterns in cities, including how pedestrians, runners and cyclists move in the urban environment.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
HS: The project started in December 2016 and finished in August 2017 in Cambridge, MA

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
HS: For the design stage, I determined overall design style and base map properties considering design keywords (Comparison, Intuition, and Legibility of trajectories). Especially the color strategy was important to increase its legibility as well as aesthetic value of the data visualization. Finally, all designs were defined as the color scheme that consists of three colors, red, yellow and grayscale. Both warm colors implies the fact that this data visualization is related to temperature and weather. Especially, the red is the top primary color to emphasize Boston data that is more important than San Fransisco data visualized with yellow.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
HS: Urban researchers, General Public are targets users.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
HS: I used Javascript, D3js, Mapbox, Leaflet, HTML, CSS

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
HS: A challenge was the fact that I should make animation with a big size of data.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
