Interview with Karla Aliaga Mac Dermitt at Friday 16th of March 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? KA: The main idea is to create an outdoor kitchen, to be used both in winter and summer, the inspiration was the way my clients lived. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? KA: The main focus is to integrate this large kitchen area into the landscape without being invasive. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? KA: I would like to be able to design in other countries FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? KA: this was designed within two months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? KA: This design was assigned by a family, who wanted the garden differently and the exterior of the house was transferred to the interior. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? KA: The design is not used by another company and we do not plan to sell or assign any right FS: What made you design this particular type of work? KA: Our company is dedicated to designing exteriors. This particular design was thought by a specific requirement of our client. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? KA: The influence of my work is manifested by a long journey through travel and great architects and landscapers FS: Who is the target customer for his design? KA: The target customer is a private individual, specifically a family of 4 people. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? KA: The difference of other projects, is the use of space, integration of architectural elements and the integration of the environment to the project FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? KA: The creation of the name is because it is literally an outdoor kitchen, within the landscape and the house. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? KA: First pencil and paper then program like Sketchup and AutoCAD. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? KA: The unique aspect is being able to live the environment and the house at the same time FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? KA: This project was worked internally in our office, where architects and landscapers collaborated. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? KA: It is fundamental since it is very important to be able to show the project in real form in 3d and with very real renderings FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? KA: We carried out a topographical investigation, analysis of the environment and a lot of concern about the materials. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? KA: Each project is a challenge, this, in particular, was mainly the environment (land, climatic aspect, topography etc.) FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? KA: How did you decide to send your design to an international design competition? Participate in 2017 with a project that obtained Bronze, it was a unique experience and I would like very much to be able to have a better prize this time FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? KA: Every time you design something different, you learn new things since every project carries an investigation that makes the project unique FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? KA: I really enjoy designing and building this project, I worked a lot with my clients so that they would be tied up with what they wanted.
