FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
NS: This design comes from the inspiration of human eyes that are seeking for wonderful things in the Mother Nature. The eyes stand for the vision. The oval golden sphere represents the icon of eye and vision. The eyes eagerly reach out and intend to accommodate many kinds of plants.
FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
NS: This installation is intended to be displayed statically.
FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
NS: Promote it, sale it, or keep developing it in different scales, materials, or under different themes.
FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
NS: This project started from scratch since 2016 in Taipei. The golden ball was made around April 2017. The duration was about 2 months with intensive works.
FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
NS: This design is not commissioned and acts as a pursuit of an inspiration.
FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
NS: This design was not produced or used by another company. To sell or lease related production rights are welcome, although I prefer to produce this work myself.
FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
NS: The connection between geometries and real subjects is also the most fun part in my design process. This is a pursuit of a vocabulary of void space and linear form that accommodates subjects like different shapes of flowers or plants.
FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
NS: No other designs and designers that helped the influence the design of my work.
FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
NS: The potential target customers include interior designers and architects to be added as part of design or decoration, or for private collectors for personal collections.
FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
NS: There might be design with similar concepts, but it’s the manner of interpretation in terms of configuration that makes difference.
FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
NS: This name comes from the inspiration of human eyes that are seeking for wonderful things in the Mother Nature like plants or flowers.
FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
NS: The design was explored using software and hardware platforms. The former was parametric programs, and the latte was 3D printing machines.
FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
NS: The oval golden sphere is designed with different hole sizes to accommodate stems of flowers or plants. The three sets of legs are perfect for any kind of surface configuration. Leg length is adjustable.
FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
NS: Nobody collaborates with me for this design. The 3D printed part was made by paying a company who has a very expensive SLS machine. The gold foil was made by paying a company who has special skill in foiling stature of God.
FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
NS: The golden oval sphere was created by parametric 3D design software with two layers of concentric surfaces under an order of random openings. The sphere was 3D-printed in Nylon.
FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
NS: To put a scene or a metaphor into a physical model was a challenge in the beginning. To make a perfect order of the cubes was another in creating depth and hierarchy of the metaphor as wishes. The path must be running smoothly before or after routing in different ways. The size of beads has to be selected carefully. Purchasing beads and putting a string through simply did not work because beads would stick together and would not run. Distance between two beads has to be maintained constantly. A variety of colors and textures were tested.
FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
NS: A parametric program was applied to create an order that is functional and also eye-catching. The vocabulary of openings or holes looks like random but actually is very flexible for different kinds of flower shapes. The two pairs of legs can be extended or retracted a little for different level conditions of surface. The entire sphere is covered by gold foil as a symbol of vision. But it is difficult to cover inside through such small and complicated openings. A golden paint was applied inside instead. The application of gold foil requires special skill. The combination of the diameter, width, and length created a smooth transaction of surface.
FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
NS: It is a self-promoting or self-evolving process to become part of an international design competition.
FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
NS: A design work was improved through stages of development in a recursive loop of examination under different scales. That’s why some design works were made more than one year.
FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
NS: There is always issue to be addressed. Let’s keep it open for next year or next competition.
