Interview with Mahesh Nampurkar at Friday 6th of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? MN: India is a unique land with rich cultural heritage. Gujarat being blessed with enculturation has united people with common experience that lead to appreciation of cultural traditions and lifestyles. Rustic Elegance the entire project is designed to reflect Indian traditions. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? MN: As per the client expectation I dreamed of a status Icon Lifestyle project to come up in the city of Vapi, Gujarat, India. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? MN: Daman & Diu are the sea side locations near Gujarat in Arabian Sea. Club house is designed to attract a large number of tourist from Daman. A destination for one to relax, party and rejuvenate in the best possible way. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? MN: The perfect blend of architecture and landscape as one design and the use of locally available materials and techniques defines the unique identity of the project FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? MN: Rustic relates to rural and elegance is something that is beautiful. Coming up with grand project with the use of locally available materials and artwork gave birth to name of the project. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? MN: Hand sketches. To the scale hand sketched drawings was the main design tool. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? MN: The 5.5 m tall fountain crafted from single stone in the form of a lantern depicting Indian culture of welcoming guests and washing down negativity before entering the clubhouse. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? MN: The project was aimed at simplicity and being native to Gujarat. I won’t say that it was completely devoid of technology, but the local labour skills and art was something that defines the project. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? MN: To synchronize and organize about 40 varieties of plants and arrange them complementing the scale form and proportions of the built mass. Plantation pallet was designed to beautify the entire space and bring in life to the dead mass. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? MN: Integrate the outdoor to the interiors. Landscape is not just designing the exteriors but merge well with the interiors as well.
