Interview with Mariia Lipina at Saturday 21st of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? ML: A basic architectural idea consisted in that, to add to existent building a structure that would be used for the different types of public activity, such as lectures, shows of films, activity of youth groups. Along with maintenance of historical memory. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? ML: Approach for transformation of building to public space for a modern culture is founded, first of all, on understanding of historical value of this building. Building built in 1904 is now chocked up by annexes, and lost the primary look. A project is returned in building by former sense of space, pranging all new partitions and dismantling an old industrial equipment, but leaving historical elements here, saving memory about a place. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? ML: Six months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? ML: This project was created as a diploma project and was presented at British Higher School of Art and Design in June, 2017. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? ML: Ges 2 is the project of maintenance, but not new architecture. Two conditions, that usually are separately from each other, offer the ensemble of fragments that will not allow some part to prevail above other. The different floors of building create space for the changing set of designer laboratories and exhibitions. His overhead floor offers multifunction space for events, that can be divided in number of different ways by means of turning panels. From here, besides museum galleries, Ges 2 also offers apartments for realization of conferences, events, seminars and educating. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? ML: This existent name of building of former power-station, for that a project was created. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? ML: The making elements of museum become "space without borders", where visitors are perceived as participants, but not audience. They open the world and place in it by means of collaboration, participation and debates.
