Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Carmine Scotch (CS) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Carmine Scotch by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Waveform here.

Interview with Carmine Scotch at Sunday 22nd of April 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CS: The goal was to create a bookcase that would adorn an empty wall like a picture disguising it true function as a furnishing accessory. The inspiration comes for the ocean which hides many secrets below the surface.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CS: The main goal of this project was to create a set of book cases that could be hung on the wall without being obvious as to their true function upon first impression.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CS: Expand it's availability to different target markets.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CS: About 4 weeks.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CS: The design was originally entered into a contest for a company that specialized in furniture and architectural products made from steel. It was one of 3 designs out of 900 submission that were chosen for production.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CS: The design is being produced by Mabele Daily Steel.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
CS: The design requirements and material that it had to be made from seemed like an interesting challenge.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
CS: Repetition is a part of nature, I was inspired by this principle that produces beautiful environments and living creatures.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CS: The target customer is someone who fallows trends and is able to appreciate highly expressive design. The target price is mid-high.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CS: The vertical format of the waves is different from most bookcase designs which are horizontal as well as the flexibility to add different size units in unlimited configurations.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CS: Inspired by the gentle ocean surface waves and the abstract representation thereof.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
CS: I used a 3D modeling program called 3D Studio Max.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CS: The way light plays between the vertical elements. The close proximity of the the vertical blades create a surface in which reflected light from decorative objects is utilized to give off a glow of light and color.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
CS: I did not collaborate with anyone on this design, however I did work with the manufacture making small revisions that would allow more flexibility in the final product.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CS: This product was specifically design for laser cutting technology driven by computer aided design.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CS: I researched similar products made of steel for home furnishings.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
CS: Some of the design challenges were set forth by the manufacture. They wanted a bookcase made of steel that was unique and would not look like a standard bookcase upon first impression. However, it could have no closed spaces, drawers or compound curves. It also had to be light enough to hang on a wall without a simple interlocking bracket.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
CS: I thought the design was unique enough that others might find it interesting.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
CS: I learned the more simple the design, the more time needed to be spent refining the lines of the project. I spent countless hours refining the curves to get them exactly the way I wanted them. They needed to be pleasing to the eye, well balanced, with the ability to still look good when reconfigure while still trying to make them appear contiguous.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
