Xsr 85 Motor Yacht by Sarp Yachts

Home > Winners > Design #62148 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Sarp Yachts (SY) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Sarp Yachts by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Xsr 85 here.

Interview with Sarp Yachts at Wednesday 25th of April 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SY: Sarp Yachts and Red Yacht Design are both have great passion for nature. The main idea of the design comes from nature and architecture. XSR 85 will be built with the parallel hybrid propulsion systems; the best alternative for the fossil fuels. Our aim in the design is to integrate enclosed spaces with more light and exteriors with green technology.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SY: Main focus was owner’s freedom and flexibility on board. For achieving this, we’ve made full glass living areas and spacious exteriors with loose furniture. Also we’ve opened the saloon glass area both sides and aft to connect outside & inside, give the owner a unique openness feeling on the maindeck. Bar and large sunbathing areas maximize the outdoor pleasure. And we’ve added a Jacuzzi (highly unusual for a boat this size) on the foredeck to use the front space area. In this yacht, designed respectful to nature, you will feel even closer to the sea with zero compromises from style.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SY: Currently XSR 85 from XSR Series is under construction and planned to delivery at 2019, Sarp Yachts is planning to attend 2019 Cannes Yachting Festival with XSR 85. After XSR 85 production begins, Sarp Yacht is planning to going into the production of XSR 125, which is the flagship model of this new hybrid Series.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SY: All XSR Series (including 85, 105 and 125) took 8 months for the final versions.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SY: This visionary green technology design request came from Sarp Yachts. They wanted to show something different, something ground breaking to the Superyacht Industry. We wanted to achieve both green technology and stylish design at the same time without giving zero compromise from each other.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SY: In light of our environmentally friendly vision and high level engineering background, Sarp Yachts had a design request from Red Yacht Design to present its brand new hybrid propulsion concept yacht family.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SY: This visionary green technology design request came from Sarp Yachts. They wanted to show something different, something ground breaking to the Superyacht Industry.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SY: Of course subconsciously designers are influenced by other designs, details, lines, curves and vision of other designers. But for this project we cannot think of any specific name.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SY: The target customers for our XSR Series are mostly people who care about environment while they want to live the exceptional freedom of yachting life style. Customers who wants to experience cruising more closely to the sea rather than luxury big SuperYacht. Our target customers have a clear mind of vision about green technology.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SY: Main difference between the similar concepts and XSR Series are our series are complete Hybrid propulsion which means this system enables you to avoid the noise, vibrations, emissions and expense of running your diesel generators at anchor. By using parallel hybrid propulsion systems, you can make slow cruises by utilising electric propulsion with nearly zero cost. The maintenance period of electric engines is also longer than internal combustion engines, so we offer with this design a low maintenance period as well as cost savings. The system will allow for more space in the accommodation areas than a yacht at the same length. We will use smaller diesel engines and the electric engines are small in themselves. Allowing the possibility for and additional cabin or much bigger master cabin. Also loose furniture arrangements on the exterior areas give the owner flexibility on board. More open spaces are very important for the design strategy because most of the owners spend their time outside in their yachts. The key factor of the design was the architectural glass arrangement which joins outside and inside together and provide more daylight into the yacht.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SY: XSR means, X came from Hybrid Propulsion, S from Sarp Yachts and R from Red Yacht Design. Name is the result of the perfect communication and partnership between shipyard and the design office.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SY: We use 3d modelling programs and naval architecture programs.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SY: The most unique aspect of XSR Series is the use of extensive glass integrated with the superstructure which gives the project the architectural touch.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
SY: Sarp Yachts is specialized in composite materials and have great knowledge about assembly of the hard projects such as their last yacht multi-award winner La Passion. Their quality vision is the driving force for the perfect engineering and design.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
SY: The idea behind XSR Series are all about green technology, from design philosophy to the engineering details, we want to take the level to the highest quality with the use of current and future technology in every possible way. Technology details of the project in explained at the question #10.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
SY: Sarp Yachts and their brokerage partners have made a market research for the hybrid yachts and came to us with their report on this area. Then we decided together what we can achieve more than the market submits to the customers.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SY: The main challenge was making a design with architectural glass use without losing the exterior design proportions; we want to give the design sophisticated look but still feel simple in overall. That was our biggest challenge; it took really long time to get the result which we want.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SY: The industry’s response in Monaco Yacht Show was really huge and international media gave great interest in the project. That’s why we decided to submit this project to the competition.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
SY: This project is a turning point in our career. Sarp Yachts is really an innovative company in the yachting industry and very professionally driven by their ambitious team. We want to impress both Sarp Yachts and the industry, result was quite good response from different places. But for achieving this we’ve given up the first styling of the project and we lost 3 months of work time, but we’ve started from scratch again with more concentration on our work. So we improve ourselves with more courage when it comes to design a new way of thinking. It’s really important to search for something new and clear vision.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
SY: No, thank you at all.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
