Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Dragomir Å uka (DÅ) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Dragomir Å uka by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Sofia here.

Interview with Dragomir Å uka at Wednesday 28th of February 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: Public space of Karlovac (Croatia), the city on 4 rivers, where I live has only one drinking fountain and it’s out of function. Urban environments deserve public access to free water as a standard of the modern civilization. For the shaping of the drinking fountain, I used natural shape of the hands that form when drinking water (cupped hands). In the further study of the shape, I used the circle as the ideal form which gave the design a recognizable and unique form. Larger cupped hands form in the base transcends into a smaller form on the top, following the radius of the circle, forming a body of the drinking fountain.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: I would have to say multifunctionality, easy adaptation to the public space, and minimalistic design

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: Production would definitely be an end goal for this design as I truly believe that it deserves a place in the world

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: About one month

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: Most of mine designs that are made contests are a pursuit of my inspiration.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: It is not produced or used by another company but I'm open for all options.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
: Moment of inspiration that coincided with a small competition in Croatia, Zagreb. Where it was awarded second place.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: No

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Everyone

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: Its simplicity, multifunctionality and easy adaptation to the public space.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: It is a name of my mother in law which is a woman worth remembering.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: Pen, paper, CorelDraw x7 and AutoCad

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: I'm repeating my self but I think its simplicity, multifunctionality and easy adaptation to the public space.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: I collaborated with my two sons. One is an expert for 3D design and other is a freshman with a knack for marketing.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: Technology in this design is at its bare minimum. Which again sets it apart for its easy adaptation to most public spaces.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: Some simple research was conducted in terms of internet, books and magazine browsing. But it's pure original concept.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: Challenge was how to create a minimalistic design that would be equally available for people, people with disabilities and animals. Main problem here is that I wanted to create a simple forme and from that one form create this multifunctionality that would be easily adapted into any public space

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: The decision was made because Croatia, a country where I live, is still a developing country and there isn't all that much room for such innovations and designs. So I decided to give it a shot with the international design competition in order to get some kind of recognition.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: Most improvements came from the preparation of this design for this competition. Most of them are reflected in the details.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
: I would just like to say that it has been a pleasure and that I will for sure come back with new ideas for the next competition.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
