Interview with Chenglong Tao at Monday 13th of August 2018

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CT: Find a suitable opportunity to open source or charge for users to download and use

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CT: From the conception of sketches, the production of computer fonts, to the design of posters, it took two consecutive months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CT: I am engaged in graphic design. Although English is not my native language, my daily work is always faced with cases of composing typefaces in English fonts. Everyone else produces fonts that are used by everyone without personality; I just want to create several sets of my own fonts. Used for work, especially if you want to make your own text or title font with different thickness and style, you like it, you have a sense of accomplishment, and you have personality. In addition, the font itself is a work and can also be sold as a product.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CT: Self-produced and sold, if possible, find a platform to sell.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CT: This set of fonts is very sturdy and heavy, and using a thousand tons to express his weight is the name.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
CT: Use CorelDraw to design the basic character shape. After the font is designed, it is imported into the FontLab Studio debug character spacing, and finally the .otf font file is output.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CT: In front of such a thick character, the character structure is cut by small white lines, which is the unique treatment of this font.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CT: The character sketch is normalized in the software and becomes a finished product.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CT: In our country, there are very few designers who specialize in developing font products independently. In particular, the design of Latin fonts is not taken seriously. The Latin fonts used by users are generally designed and developed by foreign designers, so I have to try to develop them myself. Latin font library.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
CT: Find problems by doing them, and then modify them to solve the problem; some characters can have a lot of processing methods, and some characters design several solutions at the same time, but you can only take one. After careful consideration, you decide which font is the most suitable Fonts.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
