Interview with Chien Hwa Huang at Monday 14th of May 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CH: I want to regenerate a historically remembered old building into a space that meets the current needs and let him survive in a new form. The idea of this space comes from the history of the Cold War.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CH: I want to make this space that originally belonged to a specific person to become a place where everyone can come, and to use this as the main factor to influence the development of the entire region, and we did it.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CH: I want to let more people know this piece of work, to evoke more ideas for keeping old buildings and updating them.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CH: This design took 3 weeks in the initial concept part, and the design took several months to complete.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CH: We combine the customer's business background and this space history to design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CH: Designed for my clients.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
CH: This is a new challenge, and we like to accept the challenge.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
CH: In the world there are some examples of historical buildings being renewed. That makes us want to make different works.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CH: It is very diverse and it is designed for different purposes and customers.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CH: The difference is that the site history is combined with the background of the client, and most of the exterior of the building is constructed with the original appearance.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CH: This name is by the rotation speed of vinyl records.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
CH: model,graphics software.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CH: Space use for various purposes. Incorporate scenery outside the base. Let light enter the room.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
CH: This project must include architects, interior designers, structural technicians, construction plants, and landscape designers. It is a very complete project.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CH: In this project, design technology and engineering technology are very important. The combination of the two can make this case successfully.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CH: Irrelevant.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
CH: The materials and engineering methods, because this is a historic building, many materials and construction methods are hard to find.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
CH: There have been many media reports on this project in Taiwan. I want the world to see it.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
CH: We learned many design and engineering experiences in the process, and improved our ability from breakthrough difficulties.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
