Interview with Joao Silva + Paola De Francesco at Tuesday 1st of May 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JS: The concept was based on the plot's positition, the last house on mulholand drive-california, having on the background the hollywood sign that was the base of the conceptual structure. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JS: To develop a foreward thinking concept house adapted to the plot's brief with outstanding solutions regarding structure, ecosostainability and modularity of the layout to fill the owner's needs. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JS: To develop a new way of thinking architecture. The haouse becomes not a static form but becomes a beeing that breathes and changes form in 24hours time. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JS: 60 days FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JS: The competition asked participants to design a house of the future which demonstrates the use of innovative technology, integrative environmental strategies, and capitalizes on the iconic prominence of its site beneath the famed Hollywood sign. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JS: For now its just an innovative concept. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JS: we found the Archoutloud's International competition to design a house of the future was very appealing. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JS: No, just Joao Silva and Paola De Francesco FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JS: Innovative enterprises FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JS: The concept is similar to a ‘treasure flower’, a south African plant that blooms in the morning and closes its petals at night. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JS: It means that the house becomes a living beeing that breathes. Opens to the exterior and closes its shell like if it was breathing FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JS: Hand sketching, modelling in 3dstudio, photoshop and illustrator FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JS: The concept is similar to a ‘treasure flower’, a south African plant that blooms in the morning and closes its petals at night. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JS: No, just Joao Silva and Paola De Francesco FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JS: Its a project that uses the newest techologies from the materials to engineering construction techniques FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JS: We did 360° degrees night and day research about the theme "housing"- from concept to the needs, from the past to the future, from its basis to evolution... FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JS: If a concept like that could be easily reproducted as a standard. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JS: Because the architectural ideas competitions are a great mean of exposing new ways of thinking FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JS: That this concept its very versatile and can be adapted to every plot's shape.
