Interview with Faidra Matziaraki, Victor Gonzalez Marti at Friday 31st of March 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? FV: To maintain the unique landascape that the buidling seats on, uninteruppted. As a second thought, that the building should rise- not only structurally- from the rock, but contextually and conceptually. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? FV: A house that would be self sefficent or partially self sefficient in an unfavorable environment. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? FV: Through it to promote context related architecture and sustainability. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? FV: 6 months ( first stage) & 8 months ( detail design) FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? FV: The client bought a plot and contacted us to design their summer house. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? FV: Is not used by anybody else apart from us and of course the owner. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? FV: The need of the client to visit Greece often and live the most of of it every time visits and trully experience appart from a house the nature and the context. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? FV: We look up to Peter Zumpthor and Architecture with Architects book. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? FV: A family of individuals with passion of living in a context like this. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? FV: The fact that the design is not only a mimic of traditional methods that try to hide the luxurious life that can unfold. Is a honest homenaje to architecture that survived through centuries and to the local formations of the nature wrapped with modern features and tecnology thatcan make this house sustainable and safe. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? FV: Rocksplit: Its a house that splits the rock to come through, but also uses its by spliting and sculpting it back to get constructed. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? FV: Autocad, Photoshop, 3D STudio Max. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? FV: That its gets fused with rock. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? FV: We collaborated with civil engineers and a machanical engineer specialised in the enviromental design. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? FV: The solar enery collectors are used top hit the underfloor heating system( which is also providing cooling) The fireplace is ecosmart, the rainwater is collected and pumped with a digitaƱl powerful pumb through the house. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? FV: We made researchin material and building technics also accesibilty and installations FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? FV: Vert strict Urban planner regulations in that area which are trully correct. Otherwise the context would be destroyed. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? FV: Because give chance to various people and their work not following a strict motive or tendency. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? FV: To be very pacient, travel whatever the weather condidtion in the sea and supervise the site under construction very often and detail every single aspect of the project if you want to be in control.
