Interview with George Å mejkal at Wednesday 26th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JÅ: Concept of topology optimization. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JÅ: Generating light-weighted bookcase. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JÅ: Public project and make new one with more experience. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JÅ: It takes 5 months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JÅ: Because so big and light bookcase, at the same time, is not usual. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JÅ: It is possible to sell the rights. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JÅ: It was the interest in parametric design. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JÅ: Lift architects, Zaha Hadid architects FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JÅ: Parents of family, about 40 years old FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JÅ: dimensions, weight, mobility FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JÅ: The change of the shape is possible with the script, same as with the animal. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JÅ: Rhinoceros + Grasshopper FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JÅ: weight, shape FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JÅ: Scenografie s.r.o. - fabrication corporation FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JÅ: Very big, it is collaboration with the CNC milling machine. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JÅ: Topic of topology optimization was researched. I was looking for other examples in furniture industry, and there is not too much of it. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JÅ: details, joints, crooked walls of interior FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JÅ: I found it, when I was looking for design competitions. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JÅ: Everything is possible. I reached my goal. Bookcase have about 40kg less then without the optimization.
