Interview with David Chang Design Associates Intl at Monday 1st of May 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? DC: Color blue is widely used on European defensive weapons or clothing. In the costume, the French royal family's accession to the throne or the main portrait of the prestigious family wore a blue cloak to represent the highness of the family. The color blue becomes the symbol of nobility and the wisdom of elite talent. The color tone of this cafe is inspired by the elegance of the European noble "blue". The overall design was base on French classic plus Art Deco style. The chandelier, in particular, is the honeycomb structure, which can be traced back to Art Deco period as a symbolic icon. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? DC: The existing site has a narrow and double height space. We retain the original double height to create a spacious atmosphere. This space was previously used as a hot pot cafe before acquired by the 116 years old Brasserie FLO from Paris. Different shades of blue are used in the space to establish a sense of spontaneous and relaxing dining experience for young diners. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? DC: To promote and share this award winning design to friends and relatives, especially those clients and everyone who visiting this beautiful project. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? DC: Developing concept is a lengthy process under unpredictable time frame. To be exact the initial space planning and concept took approximately two months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? DC: The design was commissioned. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? DC: The design is used by another company named Brasserie Flo which is a 116 years old restaurant group headquartered in Paris with over 300 restaurants worldwide. Cafe Flo is one of Flo Group subsidiary brands in Beijing. It is located in Beijing Sanlitun area. This area now is one of the most prosperous commercial areas in Beijing with lots of shops and restaurants. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? DC: The design was commissioned. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? DC: Design Director: David Chang, Interior Designer: Elva Ma, Interior Designer: Pingping Jiang. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? DC: Target customers mainly between age of 30 to 60 FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? DC: The general atmosphere. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? DC: The name of the Project is named by the clients who commissioned us to design. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? DC: Auto Cad, Photoshop, 3D design studio max FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? DC: The space is based on utilizing simple straight European mouldings with a little touch on the curvilinear elements. The goal is to achieve an inviting, bright, and elegant dining experience. Art Deco decorative elements are used throughout the space such as the multi-layering pilaster, wall panels and honeycomb shape pendant light fixtures. Open pore paint on walnut is applied onto the front bar. The use of mirror with bevel-edge on wall is to expand the horizontal space visually to balance the existing double ceiling height and narrow space. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? DC: We worked as a team. The following are the team members who relentlessly contribute countless hours of time to design this project. TEAM MEMBERS (4) : Design Director: David Chang, Interior Designer: Elva Ma, Interior Designer: Pingping Jiang. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? DC: N/A FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? DC: N/A FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? DC: When the space is obtained, the structural beams are neither symmetrically placed nor centring to any vertical axis in the space. This creates a difficult situation for us to design the ceiling. At the end, we decided to warp the beams with wood panels and paint, and some were transformed into arch beam to soften the visual senses. Unconventional way of placing the pendant light fixtures was used to give a sense of spontaneity. The arrangement of seating was carefully planned to maximize the number of seating to 75 seats indoor and 30 seats out door with flexible arrangement to suit any guest's request. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? DC: Love to share good design with the international community. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? DC: Become more knowledgeable of how kitchen and bar function in a restaurant. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? DC: N/A
