Home > Winners > Design #55766 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Hexagón (HD) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Hexagón by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design H-02 here.

Interview with Hexagón at Tuesday 7th of March 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
HD: We wanted to transform an ordinary object into an artistic yet functional piece of design. We manipulated a polyhedron to give it a complex estructure and all its parts assemblies are accurately manufactured so that it doesn't need any adhesive.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
HD: We wanted to create a product that authentically transmitted modernity, elegance and originality to be used as decoration in any room

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
HD: We would like to make our design known internationally, probably make a manufacture agreement and see it in stores.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
HD: About 6 months, it may not seem that difficult to make but landing the idea to a functional object in reality, considering the exact measures necessary to make it possible to arm while maintaining its stability and view was quite difficult.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
HD: We decided to pursuit an inspiration, an object accessible to all public, that even so was striking and contribute to the decoration of the space.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
HD: Right now we are producing it ourselves, we'd like to lease the production rights in the near future so we can use that time to create new things.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
HD: We have always like geometry and symmetry, its something you can see in all of our work.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
HD: Not really, we where influenced by geometry and math.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
HD: Men or women of ages 25-50. Hotels and restaurants.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
HD: We are very proud of this design because it differs very much from other planters because of the materials, way of production, composition and structure.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
HD: The "H" is from Hexagón, the name of the brand it belongs to; the "02" is by the chronological order in which it was invented, is the second product of the brand.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
HD: Computer assisted design, CNC layouts and prototypes and laser cutting for its final production.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
HD: The assembly

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
HD: No it was made by us two, Maria Paula Rico and Ana Emilia Hernández, owners of the brand.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
HD: Is the main pillar of its creation, it helped us to visualize our idea and later to test it, polish it and finish it.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
HD: We applied simple calculations into a polyhedron (cuboctahedron) volume

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
HD: Most of the time we have an idea in our minds that makes perfect sense, however when we try to see it materialized in real life it turns out that it does not work that well or maybe it is not even feasible to do. This is when we face the challenges of calculating, rethinking and modifying our idea to make it work.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
HD: We like to try our designs in all possible fields, a competition so recognized was a great opportunity to test our design and in the case of being successful have international exposure

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
HD: All of our work is a constant challenge and test of perseverance, we learn so many things when overcoming each obstacle.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
HD: It was a very complete questionnaire

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
