Interview with Xuesong Li at Tuesday 25th of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
XL: This design was inspired by spiked shoes which guarantees well performance of football players. Therefore, the conception of spikes are brought into this design, in addition, the spikes are retractable. The spikes can efficiently enhance the grip of TPR Car-rescue-track on icy and snowy pavement and make the cars pass through in safety.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
XL: I am most concerned about is the safety, I hope that through this design to solve the car in the snow and ice on the road of self-help.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
XL: I plan to apply for a patent first and then try to make a prototype.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
XL: It took me about a year, and the rest of the work was suspended.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
XL: In 2014, I led the design team to design the first generation of this product through research. In 2016 I made a modified design, can be said to be the result of the pursuit of inspiration.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
XL: This is my own design. He doesn't belong to any company. I plan to apply for patent protection in the future.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
XL: In recent years, I have been engaged in the design and development of outdoor products, I like outdoor activities, but also hope that through our design to make people's leisure life more secure and happy.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
XL: In my design work, my college classmates gave me a lot of advice, he has a wealth of experience in product design.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
XL: In winter, the road is slippery and frozen in the city streets, the product can help those inexperienced drivers.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
XL: Existing such products, although it can help vehicles get out of trouble, but there are some security risks in the use of ice. Getting rid of the friction between the floor and the floor is likely to pop up and endanger pedestrians and vehicles.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
XL: According to the material and shape characteristics of the product to determine the design name. Ensure that the product is clear and easy to understand.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
XL: AutoCAD、Rhino、Keyshot and PS.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
XL: The conception of spikes are brought into this design, in addition, the spikes are retractable. The spikes can efficiently enhance the grip of TPR Car-rescue-track on icy and snowy pavement and make the cars pass through in safety.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
XL: I was independent of the design, there are still some deficiencies in the technical aspects, to be improved.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
XL: Some of the technical principles of the structure inspired my design.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
XL: Of course, the objective research and analysis is necessary. For example: the annual winter road freezing time cycle, the type of vehicle driving in the city, the driver's age and structure, the number of traffic accidents due to traffic accidents occurred in the winter due to traffic statistics, etc..

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
XL: As the people of Academy of Fine Arts, thinking is more flexible, but the understanding of technology has some limitations.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
XL: I hope my design can be recognized by more and more people, especially in this international competition, get professional accreditation.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
XL: Chinese there is a saying "Although the house sparrow is small but be fullies equipped", in the face of this design concept, must always consider the feasibility and function of the design, reasonable in structure as far as possible.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
XL: Has been more comprehensive.
