Interview with Qin mingqian at Thursday 27th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? MQ: This design is designed for swimming athletes. After some research found that swimmers’ action can not be recorded in detail just like track man, even they have the same requirement in training. They don’t have professional camera which can record data both in the water and beyond on the water. So I designed ‘S-Assistant’ .The inspiration behind my design,I think it should have the same style with it’s workplace. So I use the curve of water-drop to design. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? MQ: My main focus is completely record the body’s movement information.Swimmers and their coaches need this completely record. This design is to help swimmers and coaches catch the data. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? MQ: I hope this design will be developed and applied to daily training of swimmers. It will make the training process more reasonable and better. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? MQ: About two years. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? MQ: I have decided to pursuit the inspiration.Because I love swimming,I’m also followed matches of swimming and swimmers.I hope I can solve this requirement I found. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? MQ: I plan to sell the design. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? MQ: It is very interesting, and design makes me happy. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? MQ: It was Heli Du,Yueming Yan that provided valuable suggestions and wonderful ideas when I was lost in deep thinking about our items. We are a team, and I can't finish this project completely without them. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? MQ: Our program aim at coaches、swimming players or any underwater athletes who want to know how the track of body is under the water, especially swimmers. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? MQ: It combined with the form of some fish-eye cameras. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? MQ: The name have two means: Super assistant and Swimmer’s assistant. So it is abbreviated to ‘S-Assistant’. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? MQ: At first,I conceived on paper. Then I use Rhino,3Dmax,v-ray and PS to perfect my design. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? MQ: It can record the movements of the swimmers in water and beyond water at the same time, and has no effect on the swimmers. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? MQ: I have completed the design with my classmate Heli Du and Yueming Yan.Although we don’t design with professional swimmer, but I am a swimmer,I know we need this. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? MQ: Recording the action and analyze data, and display the result to terminal. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? MQ: On dry land, the movements of field athletes can be clearly recorded by camera, and the athletes in the water have the same droit, which are equal. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? MQ: How to solve this problem.how to add the design to the existing communal facilities. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? MQ: I hope my design value will be recognized. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? MQ: I have learned how to translate the idea into a product, and how the inspiration echoes the product. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? MQ: I think this is a very interesting design. It is like a drip from water, ordinary, but indispensible.
