Interview with Francesca Pucciarini at Wednesday 3rd of May 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? FP: The goal of this work is to collect all the groups’ experiences that have succeeded in the Italian design history. The book is a useful tool to understand facts that have not been thoroughly studied yet. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? FP: I started working on this research on December 2013. The work has been completed in January 2015. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? FP: During my studies I developed a keen interest in the radical design of the 1970s. When I talked about this with academic supervisor Prof. Vincenzo Cristallo, he proposed me to study the design groups. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? FP: Definitely my academic supervisor Prof. Vincenzo Cristallo. Although I did the entire research of the data, all the texts and the design of the book, the original idea belongs to the professor. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? FP: The book analyzes a very specific topic, it is therefore intended for a public of people working in the field of design. However, the language and the method chosen to present facts and information permit also to people who does not know the topic to understand it. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? FP: Although there is a rich bibliography about many of the design groups described in my research, it is impossible to find a general reconstruction of the phenomenon. "Design in Italy in project groups" is born precisely as a collection of all the experiences and creates tools to understand the phenomenon in its entirely. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? FP: We interviewed important personalities who had been part of the experiences described in the book like Andrea Branzi, Gianni Pettena, Ugo La Pietra, Franco Audrito and many others, who gave us their personal version of the facts. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? FP: It was very challenging to find specific historic sources, for two different reasons; firstly, the rarity of certain specific materials, dating back to the 1960s and 1970s (limited editions of magazines, or publications with a limited print run); secondly, the enormous quantity of material that needed to be consulted due to the extended time frame that the research involves. In addition, it was difficult to set up the information in a way that they were clear and understandable to a non-expert audience, because of the specificity of the subject.
