Interview with Sarp Yachts at Monday 13th of February 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SY: I find best part of my design inspiration from car design and architecture.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SY: The target was an exceptional vessel, something in between a sporty motor yacht and a true explorer vessel. Personal, elegant, dynamic and timeless in the same part.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SY: The aim is to present it to final clients when all technical aspects will be solved, in order to create a pre-engineered concept which could save precious time to the possible owner. And of course winning another one!

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SY: The process length is always different, in this case it took at least 5 weeks because of the client’s feedbacks and requests were been a lot.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SY: It was commissioned by the client, but I was going to start to working on something similar before the agreement.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SY: Everything was made in house by Hot Lab team.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SY: I saw a beautiful trawler with a massive central air exhaust. I tried to mention it in a modern vessel; I think everything comes from this idea.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SY: Basically my influence comes from the car design. In this case I took some inspiration from '70s Italian car designers.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SY: The target customer needs something different. There are several 60 m yacht proposals in the market, most of them are impersonal.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SY: Nothing in particular. Every concept is for a different shipyard or client, for this reason the creating process is always different.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SY: Naming is coming from the shipyard and it is a character in Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne. This to emphasize the idea that this vessel may travel everywhere, anytime.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SY: Obviously I use the same tools for every project. Nothing special: hand sketch on my tablet, after that we worked with the 3D software for create the 3D model and the photorealistic renderings.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SY: I approach every element of the project in the same way; everything is part of the same concept. Again, I take care of every detail, every shape, and every edge. This is a typical car designer approach; the yacht design process is usually more unfocused on details.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
SY: The guys in Hot Lab studio collaborate with me, mainly during the 3D model building process.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
SY: The glass technology made a big improvement in the last years now is possible to build huge windows without penalizing the safety. This concept was not possible to build some years ago.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
SY: The only analytical research I made is in the market, I need to know the trends and the most requested features.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SY: Mainly it was difficult to find the space for the big swimming pool forward to the master cabin.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SY: Hot Lab usually submits several design works to international competitions.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
SY: Nothing in particular. I learn a lot during every design work, it will be the same next time.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
SY: I think we went through most of the crucial aspects.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
