Interview with Manss Aval at Sunday 23rd of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MA: Many people associate beauty only with exotic venues or extraordinary settings, whereas I believe that beauty can be found in even the most "mundane" objects surrounding us on a daily basis. My objective was to express this with a simple, yet powerful image.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MA: I wanted to explore simple geometric constructs as examples of "mundane" and inanimate elements to capture my message.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MA: Since presenting this design to different audiences, I have received a very positive response and was encouraged to develop this concept further with other designs using this principle. I have now a complete series, both in monochromes and color, that architects and interior designers in particular find very attractive for their contemporary residential and commercial settings.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MA: It took several months of serious effort.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MA: I was pursuing an inspiration.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MA: I am in discussions with several companies for exclusive applications.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
MA: Symmetry and geometry are universally attractive and can readily be incorporated into powerful designs.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MA: No. Only many other artists that have generally inspired me.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MA: My main client audience are professional in architecture and interior design, but also fashion designers, graphic designers and technology companies.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MA: This is a bit of a difficult question as every designer aims to produce a unique work. To me this design comes with a surprise: at first glance it appears very simple with sections of two spirals, but on closer examination it reveals considerable and captivating complexity.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MA: The name focuses on the essential portion, the area of intersection of the spirals, their link and combination.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MA: Photography and actual models.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MA: I consider it to be an interactive work: one that can engage the viewer for a long period and inspire them to repeatedly zoom in and out. Some have commented they find it mesmerizing.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MA: This was a solo effort.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MA: I have a lifetime of technology experience.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MA: Not particularly. In photography and other visual arts, you learn to pay attention to small details in your environment. I was surprised to see so many people passing by "ordinary", yet beautiful settings.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MA: One of the issues was to select the best general expression, a square, rectangle or other shape. I decided on a square format as having the greatest utility.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MA: I thought it was strong enough to be considered as a submission at this level.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MA: One has to learn how to be your own worst critic.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
MA: No, thank you.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
