Interview with CTRC Design Consultant Ltd. at Thursday 4th of May 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? CL: Our objective was to inject a young and energetic impression to their workspace. Hence, we proposed to use the combination of yellow, green and a natural wood from the element of spring. This concept is to deliver the efficiency and progressive corporate image for the interpretation. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? CL: Based upon the requirements, the whole floor must accommodate a multitude of staff, meeting rooms, director rooms and more. In this case, practicality is very important for the space planning. We designed using linear lines as the coherent element to create a sense of space and a open plan was adopted for the general office. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? CL: We will keep going and always do our best for the upcoming design projects. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? CL: We took around 1-2 weeks for the design concept and direction, 1 month for the stage of layout plan as per the back and forth comments by client, plus 1 month for the 3D renderings and material board for confirmation. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? CL: Yes, it was a commissioned project. We wanted to design the workspace with comfortable and relaxing ambiance, it is very important to make a balance based upon the hectic life in Hong Kong. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? CL: Perhaps the two of us, we do influence and support each other. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? CL: We boldly used yellow and green, this two striking colour combination as it is quite difficult to control in general. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? CL: In order to make a balance of two striking colours “yellow and green”, we selected to use a timber wall finish and solid wood for the furniture, this combination of colour and materials presented warmth and a harmonious space. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? CL: We refined the reception by adding more timber elements according to the comments by Feng Shui Master. In particular, we needed to follow the colour requirement when we selected artworks. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? CL: Our big challenge of this project was the super low beam with 2.2 meters throughout the space. In order to improve the oppressive feel of the low ceiling, we utilized the contrast of these yellow linear elements with green carpet to visually make the ceiling look higher in space. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? CL: It is the best way to get recognition and A Design Award is the most influence international platform. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? CL: We proposed to extensively use yellow to present the young and energetic image at the beginning. Yet, the client requested to reduce the amount of yellow and add more timber to create a certain mature ambient. During this process, we weighed the use of proportion for the colour and materials. Eventually, we came up with a solution and the result is good in the end. According to this and previous experience, we learnt never give up and finding solutions are always the process of improving ourselves.
