Interview with SEBNEM BUHARA at Monday 24th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? SB: The inspiration of the bookcase is the shape of a simple rectangular frame. It was inspired by the unity of contrast and harmony. Ironman is not only a design manifest and value but its also like a sculpture with details. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? SB: The project started in March 2016 and finished in May 2016 in Istanbul. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? SB: The design being produced and still on sale in my design shop named Bou Art&Design in Karaköy-İstanbul/ Turkey. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? SB: Ironman have an minimal, quality and unique details. The simple look balancing modern effects on the material and details give ironman an above the line beauty. Those who want to see this minimalist design at their places can easily buy it from our design company. We can be sure that Ironman brings dynamism to the places. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? SB: Ironman is among new designs with minimal, quality and unique details. The simple look balancing modern effects on the material and details give ironman an above the line beauty. With the harmony of its laser cut legs, shelves and line details, it brings dynamism to the places. Ironman has sufficient storage capacity as well as an esthetic appearance. Ironman bookshelf can be used as a separator in homes and offices. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? SB: The main design idea was found; combined two different but also similar field, Architecture and Construction by using construction methods and materials to form a design. Materials used in design are iron and iron plates which is used in construction fields in our daily lives. These unpredictable used materials gives sculptural vision to the design. The design is intended to be used as a visual accessory other than for the purpose of creation. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? SB: Materials used in design are iron and iron plates which is used in construction fields are quite heavy and hard to form a shape. All parts of design like legs and line details are laser cut. The main structure is made on iron rod which is copper coated. And all used iron rods can be coated in every color by client preference. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? SB: The most difficult challenge came in making the first prototype and dimensions. In the first sight the design looks light but it is quite heavy. Materials used in design are iron and iron plates which is used in construction fields in our daily lives and these materials are heavy to move with ease. It is an weakness we accept while design our bookshelf however the design itself shows objects on the shelves clearly and unique. That reason makes the design successful in our eyes. Also the clean finnishes of the weld parts of iron rods needs sensitive workmanship and cleaning. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? SB: We learned how to properly use materials of different weight and construction.
