Interview with Anna Strupinskaya Anastasiya Kokoreva at Thursday 27th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? AS: We were inspired by the great Renessance epoch and especially city of Florence in Italy. Our new line «Florence» reflects the spirit of innovation and exquisite combination of ideal proportions. The great architect Filippo Brunelleschi, who created the unique dome of Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral, had proved that the art of engineering together with design is able to conceive absolute masterpieces. Rising above the city, the dome with its aspiration to the heights and its graceful silhouette to this day defines the architectural character of Florence. It gained the recognition as a symbol of the Renaissance epoch. The harmony between round and square shapes, the triumph of ideal proportions, the Golden ratio – these cornerstones had been set more than 6 centuries ago. We are still fascinated by its impeccable creations. We were following the canons of harmony combining it with modern technological possibilities while designing the «Florence» wiring accessories line. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? AS: The general theme was to follow the tradition of classics while saturating it with modern design and innovation. We wanted to combine great traditions with modern style and technologies. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? AS: We are going to continue design of the Florence line. At the moment we have already design 2 thermostats matching the line design - digital and analog one. They will be available on the market soon. Also we are now working on the design of the extension cord with matching design. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? AS: The overall project development took about a year. The design process lasted less then 6 months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? AS: It was a comission from SST group company. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? AS: It`s absolutely forbidden to sell this design to anyone else exept for LLC "Special systems and technologies". This design was created for them and they have the only right to use it. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? AS: This a mass-production type of work made of plastic and it`s connected to electricity, so it must be absolutely safe in use. But nevertheless that this task is not an easy one, it went well and it reflects our views as designers and it has a concept behind it. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? AS: Sergey Korotkov is our leading graphic designer and helped a lot in this project. He developed the graphiv style, package, identity of the whole line and the web-site. So he influenced our work, but mainly we worked as a team and we pursiuted one general concept idea behind it. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? AS: The target audience for this design is huge. It was made for many people, for the masses. So that everyone can now afford to buy a good design wiring accessories for reasonable money, as long as Florence line is positioned in low-cost market segment. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? AS: This design has a particular shape and proportions and also the design of frames for 2-5 posts are unique. Also matte surface makes it standalone. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? AS: Florence as a name for the line was suggested by us, designers. It reflects very good the overall concept and it`s beautiful and unique. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? AS: We used 3DSMax, Vray, Corona render, also Adobe pack. Also we used 3D printing. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? AS: The most unique asepect of this design is it`s connection to the Renessance, the harmony of shapes, it`s matte tactile surface. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? AS: We worked with a group of engineers inside SST group, who were resposnible for making design of metal moulds. We gave them final design only after we approved it on 3D printed model. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? AS: The main aim was to make a safe product, as far as it connects to electricity. So the role of technology was to provide it. And it worked very well, the wiring accessories have a big guarantee time. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? AS: We made a design-research and bench-marking before starting the project. It gave us a lot in uderstanding about design niche on the market. Also we have visited a Light and Building Fair in Frankfurt to see the novelties from competitors. Also marketing team hepled us with analysis of the wiring accessories market. All this factors helped us to create a good design proposal, that we developed into the line. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? AS: Everything went smooth and well. We`ve made only 1 correction on the stage of preparing moulds, that`s all. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? AS: We just thoght that the design is intersting and we must try our chance. We knew long ago about A`design award, so it was no doubts that we`d sent it there. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? AS: We learned how to work as a team at one big project, from the point of view of developing concept, leading the project, making product and graphic and design altogether.
