Interview with Aya Kawabata at Tuesday 7th of March 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? AK: I think it's comes from music and my imagination world. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? AK: This work, I focus to imagine space there is not only about the surface of color or images on the textile. I was imagining how people feel or how my textile will make a environment around our world and everyday life. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? AK: I am planning making my piece that is similar like composing orchestral suite. I have been thinking about to making symphony that include around nine-movement. and actually this piece is first movement of my nine- movement symphony. so I think I will make eight more movement. that will be one complete symphony piece. very exciting. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? AK: Around three month between one year FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? AK: I think this is two reasons. one is architecture study and the other is classical music. throuthpout those tree things I start think about light and shadow, space and human body and our life more and more. those experience makes me start this project . FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? AK: I think this project can be limited edition. but I am always very interested in collaboration new project :)! if you are interested in work with me always welcome to contact me. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? AK: emerging my life. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? AK: I can say my design thinkings are really influenced by classic music composers who died few handled years ago. Especially I learned so many things from Germany composer J.S.Bach. One of my dream is making something design that is like Goldberg Variations BWV988 FS: Who is the target customer for his design? AK: or everyone. any gender race and generation. One of my real ( and dream) targets are people after 200 years later. . ( that same situation I am enjoying some cool musics that made 200 years ago, those music is still makes happy moment this time. its one of really great things in our world) FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? AK: I was thinking want to named something very simple that everyone know. and something that never happening at the same time. Sun and Night is everyone know ( even tiny baby ).But also everyone might imaging each own moment with sun and night. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? AK: sketches with basic pen and paper, computer, weaving machine, play instrument that help my brain clear between work. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? AK: more like music. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? AK: New matelals, also we can control and sumirate more details and structures before start weave with new technorogy. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? AK: mostly 24 hour 7 days I am thinking about my design around my mind. so maybe everything influenced my work:) but also sometime my personal experience makes me something want to creare. for example last winter I climbed snow mountain that made me to make something snow forest! mostly nature and music is strong my inspiration. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? AK: always challenging is material and color. I always want to use many colors however, technically it is difficult to install so much yarn at the same moment. or material texture can not fit the object. but for sure challenge or limitation bring me next step always. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? AK: my friend recommend me this competition. ( thanks so much! I always appreciate everyone around my life) FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? AK: Mostly I am learning from materials. When I do sketched on the paper, is it only happening in my mind but after start to create object in real situation, then see about real solution, I can found something that never expect. those extra solution is always give me ideas for next step. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? AK: I would like to say thank you very much for everyone who support to my work. I always appreciate my families and great people around my life.
