Interview with Jo Zhu at Wednesday 26th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? WZ: The main inspiration behind this design is natural granite stone block. The irregular surface of natural granite stone provided me a model for imitation, to further work out furniture with similar characteristic on its appearance. The main principle behind making such design is, it should look natural although it is an artificial, man-made item. It should become something that can provide a natural environment sense in an interior space. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? WZ: It would have to be how I could make the stainless steel cabinet doors to look like the surface of natural granite stone. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? WZ: I am going to promote this item as one of my unique and delicate product. Also this item can be counted as a mark of my early works, they are much closer to art installation characteristic. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? WZ: It took me a little bit more than a month. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? WZ: This is an early concept of mine at two years ago. At that time I wanted to make furniture with art installation characters. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? WZ: Yes, my design is produced and is among the selling furniture items in my brand's direct stores in Shenzhen, China. I produce it myself and sell it myself. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? WZ: It would have to be my curiosity on how art installation and furniture with real life function could work together. Such question motivated me to design this item and some other items also with art installation features. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? WZ: I intend to introduce this design to private villa owners, hotel owners or club and chamber owners. I assume that people with wealth and specific aesthetic taste will enjoy having such an unique item in their interiors. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? WZ: It is its appearance. Its appearance brings natural looking texture into a piece of furniture for daily use, making it also like an art installation. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? WZ: We employed hand hammering technique on making the stainless steel doors into a natural-looking / granite-like shape. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? WZ: I joint this prestigious international design competition with promotional concern. If I win I will receive great benefits. Also I want to join the competition as a test for myself to see how my design capability is comparing to other designers in the world.
