Interview with Jo Zhu at Wednesday 26th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? WZ: The main inspiration behind this design is cotton or bamboo weaving. I wanted to imitate such texture into daily life furniture to see what surprise can occur. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? WZ: I wanted to make a curio shelf that also has the function of screen. Using weaving texture allowed the furniture to preserve visual penetration effect so that it won’t break apart the connection between two separated parts of an interior space. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? WZ: I am going to promote this item as one of my unique and delicate product. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? WZ: Not more than one month. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? WZ: I wanted to design a piece of furniture that never existed in market, and it gives people unique experience when people place it in their interior space. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? WZ: Yes, my design is produced and is among the selling furniture items in my brand's direct stores in Shenzhen, China. I produce it myself and sell it myself. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? WZ: I tend to design furniture for young to middle age people with certain wealth and taste, and those who want modern oriental furniture according to their cultural concerns. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? WZ: We gave it name from its inspiration: cotton or bamboo weaving, so we called it Weave Curio Shelf. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? WZ: It massively used a lot of real leathers to decorate, to outline the wrap and weft structure which also allows a unique visual penetration sense. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? WZ: I joint this prestigious international design competition with promotional concern. If I win I will receive great benefits. Also I want to join the competition as a test for myself to see how my design capability is comparing to other designers in the world.
