Home > Winners > Design #50314 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Tiago Curioni (TC) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Tiago Curioni by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Bubble here.

Interview with Tiago Curioni at Tuesday 28th of February 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
TC: Produce a design with pure and minimalist lines, canceling surpluses, with respect to the environment and comfort to the user

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
TC: The intention was to develop a luminaire of intuitive use and that was elegant and of contemporary forms.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
TC: I would like to try a job offer in a design office outside of Brazil.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
TC: It was especially fast. The drawing came inspired by children playing soap bubbles.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
TC: It was developed for my own studio and today we sell it in several design stores and galleries around Brazil.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
TC: There is the possibility of selling the patent. It depends on the proposal.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
TC: Our studio still had no table lamps on the production line.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
TC: The design in Brazil is currently very strong and active. Our colleagues in the profession have become friends and partners in other projects, too.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
TC: We sell to design stores, galleries, but also to retailers and customers who consume our products regularly.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
TC: We believe that Bubble is a lamp different from everything we find in the market and its differential is precisely the simplicity of use, without any complex gear or systems that may come to a break.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
TC: Bubble, from the children's play of making bubbles soap with a straw.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
TC: Our designs are always born by hand and then are calibrated with the use of AutoCAD and other software.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
TC: Lightness and elegance.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
TC: Yes, our studio had help from a company specializing in marbles, which made the first sphere with the help of a CNC. Nowadays the spheres are hand carved, for having a better result and more homogenous.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
TC: Because it is entirely handmade, with the exception of the first one that had the sphere sculpted with a CNC, we believe that our piece is exclusively handmade, without the use of advanced technologies.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
TC: We seek to clearly understand who our target audience is and work on items and materials that are required by them.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
TC: First, find massive blocks of stone near Sao Paulo, then cut the brass pipe to fit the LED lamp. The whole process is done by hand and any deviation would render the piece unusable.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
TC: We already knew the competition, because last year we won with another item, the Angel bench.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
TC: We have learned that stones are fragile and our packaging has been developed to be used in aircraft, protecting Bubble lamp from any damage during transportation.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
TC: no

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
