Home > Winners > Design #50306 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Phebos Xenakis (PX) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Phebos Xenakis by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Trapesi here.

Interview with Phebos Xenakis at Sunday 9th of October 2016

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
PX: Currently the design is not in production. Hopefully it can make it's way to being produced.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
PX: I started designing this in Januari 2016 and finished it by the end of June 2016. In total it took about 6 months

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
PX: When doing my internship I was never assigned a project to focus on thus I had to pursuit my own interests. This lead to focusing on daily problems with everyday furniture.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
PX: The design is currently not being produced. If a company would be interested in the design they can always approach me with a proposition.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
PX: A repeating problem that I saw all too often where people do not find a proper place for their bags or purses.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
PX: No, this was a design that was worked out and produced by myself as part of my thesis.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
PX: The main targets are public places, cafes, restaurants. The design would be used to ease up certain activities such as storing/hanging the customers bag/purse.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
PX: The way the added function is integrated makes the design more unique than other bistro tables.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
PX: Because of my greek roots I always try to implement some greek into the names. 'Trapezi' meaning table and 'pesi' meaning falling in greek were merged together into one word.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
PX: I started by sketching and brainstroming which lead to the making of small prototypes. After the desired concept was achieved I modelled the design in a 3D software. By making use of my 3D file I produced some of the parts myself, other more difficult parts were made by specialized companies. Finally I assembled and finished everything myself.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
PX: The folds at each end are such a noticable design aspect that it can be used to create a whole product family. It combines function and aesthetic into one piece and thus resulting to the saying 'form follows function'.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
PX: I created this design all by myself, some parts were made by specialized companies but of course everything had to be paid for, there were no collaborations.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
PX: Some parts of the table had to be produced by more modern production techniques as everything has to fit perfectly together.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
PX: At the start of my brainstorming I wanted to make sure that the problem I saw many people faced with was really there. Thus I created an online enquete asking people if they have ever encountered such a problem.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
PX: As a student you have a limited budget, this is why 90% of the work was done by myself including the production.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
PX: Creating this latest work of mine I realized how much my skills have improved and how much can be achieved in 3 years.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
PX: If a company is interested in the design they can always contact me with a proposition.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
