Interview with Satoshi Okada at Monday 24th of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SO: The building is configured as multiple ship-like volumes which are interlocked in a complex layout.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SO: The building shall lay scattered in the forest, as its view from the outside is fragmented by lush vegetation around it.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SO: One year.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SO: The design concept was entirely conceived by Satoshi Okada and it derives both from the context and from the human feelings it aims to trigger.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SO: No.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SO: The design concept was entirely conceived by Satoshi Okada and it derives both from the context and from the human feelings it aims to trigger.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SO: The same structural system has been later applied to the Agri-community Center;

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SO: Visitors of the private gallery, intellectually active users.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SO: This design is part of a ongoing thread of research and practice.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SO: It derives from the name of its location.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
SO: Hirokazu Toki, structural engineer and researcher. Together we developed and optimized the CSS (Container Structure System) that bears the loads of the whole building.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
SO: It enhance the architectural concept and ensure comfort and safety throughout the whole building.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SO: Because of its outstanding beauty.
