N1 Series Knives by Cangshan

Home > Winners > Design #49839 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Cangshan (CC) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Cangshan by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design N1 Series here.

Interview with Cangshan at Tuesday 25th of October 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CC: Balance. The knives themselves are well balanced, which was a difficult task to accomplish when designing all-metal forged knives. Forged knives are heavier than stamped knives and this is the reason for the unique hollow handle feature of the knife set. By removing material from the handle of the knife we were able to create an exceptionally balanced piece. This idea of balance continues in the matching of natural wood textures against sleek metal ones, warm and cold tones beautifully juxtaposed besides one another. Every aspect of this knife set is purposefully balanced against another one, beauty and function seamlessly meld into one.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CC: A perfect knife. Maybe that is an unattainable ideal, perhaps a little subjective, but we wanted a knife that spoke to the needs of the professional creative. A knife set that was equal parts beautiful and functional.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CC: Continue to push and improve. We plan on improving the materials even further with an amazing high alloy steel that out performs that already excellent steel we currently use. More knives will also be added to this line so we can offer even more functionality to the user.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CC: Cangshan does everything we can in-house. The designs are all our own, this particular knife series is patented, and like all our knives manufactured and currently distributed by us.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CC: The professional creative. From commercial chef’s to amateur home cooks we wanted to create a knife that was as aesthetically forward and well executed as the precise craftsmanship of the knives themselves. This knife set is furniture for the kitchen, a vital and foundational set of tools that speaks to and enhances the creative workflow of the cook.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CC: Quality. These a premier caliber professional culinary tools. They look amazing, but they perform perfectly. With an incredibly sharp Asian style edge these knives also have amazing edge retention so they stay sharp longer.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CC: The minimal style hollow handle.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CC: There was mountains of research and data that went into the N1 Series. We hired experts on metallurgy to teach us how to get the absolute best performance from the metals we use, created countless iterations of the knife so we could tireless test the effectiveness of the knife in real world conditions. Every aspect of these knives, from their weight, to the thickness of their blades, to the types of woods we felt would best emphasize the unique design of the knives themselves was informed from piles of data.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
