Interview with Armin Cheng at Wednesday 5th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? AC: In Asian countries which are dominated by builders duplicating a large number of residential spaces, In. Dot Design attempted to think out of the box for this case by adopting the simplest and most effective measurement to give a more vivid look of home, and also intense interaction between people, space and time according to the demand of the homeowner. . FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? AC: The case is located in a residential building in the urban, which is not quite upright and foursquare on the floor plane and has only daylighting on one side. The walls that are used for partitioning each space not only block the daylight but also the line of sight and limited the movement as well. Therefore, the interior designer abandoned the stereotype of thinking which incorporates only one door for one room and created a more transparent indoor landscape. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? AC: It's a residential design. We wish this winning design can make the family futher intense interaction in the future. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? AC: It took 2 months for design discussion and 4 months for renovating construction. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? AC: We like to provide a differnet home image to common urban houses in Aisa which always crowded and single-sided lighting. Therefore, after discusing with homeowner, we provide desgin inspiration and plan for this project according to homeowner and his members' demand. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? AC: It is a residential house design for 3 family members. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? AC: we are a professional and creative interior desgin team, and we like to provide the best home solutions for homeowner, making a better of living! FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? AC: Because we like to change the impression of Asian house and maxium the function, we FS: Who is the target customer for his design? AC: It is a residential house design for family members. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? AC: In Taiwan, we can find many interior was redesigned to either a fully opened or semi-opened pattern in order to get more sunlight; In this case, we not only abandoned the traditional layout and partition to get the space open and bright, but also build a 150cm-wide "light corridor. In daytime, the angle of the sunlight coming in the house changes with time and displays the trajectory of light and shadows. Furthermore, regarding the functionality, this light corridor is designed as an elevated woodwork to reduce the possibility of walking into it so that the rooms aside could be free of disturbance. The elevated platform could also functions as a space for parents and children's lying and playing on it, which conceals huge drawers to expand the storage space of the house. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? AC: According to the partition and layout in this work, we made people live in this hose LIBERATED. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? AC: In In.Dot Design works, you can find a sense of comfort with harmony of color and layout. As The designer himself is also an illustrator, who expresses unique line texture, space penetration and lighting layers by which the human and simple style. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? AC: In.Dot Design is a professional and full of creation interior design team. The main desginer is Armin Cheng who works with a strong team with technical skills colleagues. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? AC: The floor plane of this case is neither upright nor foursquare and is single-sided daylighting. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? AC: It is a unique work that changes the thinking of living and traditional home layout in Asia. we want to encourage this new style of living, a way which can increase the interaction and keep privacy at same time.
