Interview with Paul Stet at Friday 22nd of April 2016 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? PS: Soldiering on the daily tasks we often need to carry all sorts of items: a tablet, a book, a notebook, phone, wallet. The containers for that are often too large, too sloppy, too heavy or simply dull. Sometimes all you need is simply an XL pocket tight to your body. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? PS: Being able to safely and comfortably carry just a few essentials and not sacrificing the look. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? PS: I intend to do a smaller version of it. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? PS: It took a year, from first sketches and prototypes to getting stock of components and building the first batches. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? PS: I designed this particular concept because I saw a lot of potential to it's uniqueness and problem-solving. I had this idea and decided to take action encouraged by tons of good feedback. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? PS: I am producing it at the moment. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? PS: Mostly male, 30-50 FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? PS: The suspenders and the connecting system are unique to all the other shoulder holsters, the secured magnetic closing and the overall look. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? PS: Sketchup, Solidworks, Keyshot, scissors, thread and needle, cutter, etc. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? PS: The strap system, it is very comfortable, adjustable and versatile. The long suspender can be clipped in many positions (front-side-back) or even detached. It is great for servicing reason or if user wants to wear the holster just as a bag. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? PS: I collaborate with a fashion Designer and a leather specialist (shoemaker). FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? PS: Working with leather is different than working with any other material. We had to create a bespoke manufacturing flow for the holster, particularly the thermo-forming of the wall hardener required refined craftsmanship. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? PS: I received very good feedback from anyone who saw the holster and tried it/buy it and because it was a personal project I decided to see if a specialized board would appreciate it too. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? PS: I basically learn from the scratch how to work with leather, I wasn't working with this technology before
