Interview with Ana Silva at Friday 22nd of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AS: The inspiration for the creation of this sink emerged from the research of architectural forms and geometric volumes. It was fundamental to make the dish drying area more practical without neglecting the aesthetic part.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AS: The main purpose of the development of this product was to inovate, wate maket differentiation and surprise in the final costomer.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AS: In the future, i plan to develop a product line based on Invictus. For instance: a single sink, a dishwasher with a common drainer and accessories to complement this range.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AS: From September 2015 to January 2016.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AS: Within the scope of research and product development, i was challanged to develop a differentiating product for our new catalog.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AS: My design is being produced by Rodi - Sinks and Ideas company.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AS: The ambition of making a new and out of the box product.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
AS: I quite appreciate Philippe Starck`s work, whose main features are contemporary design, both in form and in the materials he uses.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AS: This product is for a perfect new and modern stylled kitchens.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AS: The user can wash the dishes and put them on the draining rack that is embedded in the sink. This way he will not need to buy a separate drainer to complement the bowl. The incorporation of the draining rack next to the bowl allows the surplus waters that flow from the dishes, to go directly into the sewer, facilitating the day-to-day usage. The 40mm frame makes the product different and prevents water from splashing to the outside of the working area by confining the water to the sink.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
AS: The name is about the majestic appearance that the product has, which is enhanced by the 40 mm sink`s height.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
AS: Irresistible and versatile, born from the combination of a dream bowl and a multifunctional rack. It is complemented with a retractable tap, a rectangular valve - with an extractable cover - and overflow. Its majestic look is enhanced by the 40mm height of the bowl creating an alternative design. Our offer is enriched by a dishwashing supporting area that adds practicality and glamour. A flexible solution that will help organize and store the wet dishware in an extremely functional way.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
AS: To develop this product i gathered some help from Industrial Designers an Engineers.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
AS: We used high tech machinery for the development of this product sch as last generection CNC Robots.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
AS: The design of this sink is the result of an intensive research and to answer the need of the two main functions of the product: washing and draining dishes. The main objective was to create a product that would simplify those functions and meet the tendencies and requirements of the market - benchmarketing - that showed us the necessity of following architectonical, straight and minimalist forms.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
AS: Challenges: Manufacturing process; Welding of the frame to the bowl; Welding of the draining rack.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
AS: During the development of this product and in partnership with the company, we quickly realized that this was a product with strong features and that these would be appropriate to compete.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
AS: The development of this product tanght me that when designing a new product it is essential to take in consideration the manufacturing processes, so that it is possible to be sure that its production is viable.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
AS: No.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
