Home > Winners > Design #45409 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Seranit Group (EC) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Seranit Group by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Aquanit here.

Interview with Seranit Group at Thursday 21st of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
EC: The starting point is the idea to develop a more hygiencic and more durable product than the acrylic bathtubs and bathroom marbles or other materials. Aquanit is designed in a way that will be in harmony with the porcelain tiles.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
EC: Aquanit, which is the first porcelain shower tile of the World , does not absorb water, is hygienic and stain-proof , creates the feeling of a seamless space , is resistant to chemicals, does not fade, provides the one-piece advantage compared to normal ceramic flooring , offers an aesthetic and stylish appearance , and provides product options that may adapt to all bathrooms.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
EC: At the end of year 2015, the idea of a porcelain shower tile was suggested in Istanbul. Then in 2016, R&D studies were completed in the Bilecik Seranit plant. In February 2016 , it was introduced to all customers and user groups.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
EC: No, Aquanit is the first porcelain shower tile of the World. Seranit Group sells this product all over the world.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
EC: Architects

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
EC: Aquanit can be easily applied by a ceramic tile installer just like tiling while flooring the bathrooms. It is sold as a full set including a drain system and a cover. It has various drain options in line with the drain systems of the buildings. A smooth transition is ensured without any elevation difference with the wall and the floor tiles.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
EC: Its difference from the bathroom tubs is the fact that it is hygienic and stronger as it is a technical porcelain.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
EC: We work with our designer team and product development departmant

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
EC: A ready to press body is prepared using natural porcelain raw materials. It is pressed using a metal mold with a special channel. Then natural stone patterns are printed on it with digital pressing technology. A matte and anti-slip surface is created by oven drying it at almost 1200 degrees. Then a drain system and a cover that are specially designed for Aquanit are added.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
EC: While developing the idea of a porcelain shower tile, all the shower trays both in the world and in Turkey were examined. And the issues of the available products were discussed. Then the possible sizes of Aquanit were determined. The first molds were produced in the size of 90 x 135cm. At the end of the examinations made on the prototype , the product had been revised by adding channels and slopes in order to facilitate the flow of water. And different cover options are developed to address different preferences. Moreover , 3 different drain systems have been developed to adapt to different building structures. Special design natural patterns are created to ensure harmony with all bathrooms. Further to this , Aquanit in the size of 90 x 90cm has been developed to be used in smaller bathrooms. These efforts were all carried out by the cooperation and the coordination of ceramic production experts , architects and engineers.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
