Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Mostafa ArvandBARMCHI (MA) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Mostafa ArvandBARMCHI by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Radix here.

Interview with Mostafa ArvandBARMCHI at Thursday 21st of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MA: Radix is inspired by the nature. It sucks in the ugly and creates beauty. What lays in this design is attention to nature and the living creatures, especially plants and trees that use analysis, math and ecology. The beginning of this kind of design starts fast, but your way to the finish line needs patience.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MA: Our main focus in this process was “designing a product". It was the fact that the current products in the market for kitchens for eliminating smells and cooking odors had flaws. What was important for the designing team, was to get to a high productivity point, using the knowledge of Bionic design and the plant's behavior of absorbing pollution and producing clean air.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MA: This was not the first prise winning design for our team and continuing down this line will hopefully be persistent and attending events like this, brings the designing group to higher levels of design and philosophy of the design.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MA: We got to the final design in four months and the main plan was formed and the development is now under process.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MA: Because of having a fondness for designing smart home appliances, we decided to design this product, and with the observation of the future market, getting to this point seemed logical. This project was a partnership between "CAN" home appliance company, and the department of research and development. The result needs applied studies and etc...

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MA: As it was said before, the whole design process of this product, was a partnership of the department of research and development of the CAN home appliance production company, and all the rights of is product belongs to CAN.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
MA: Nature and green way of living and the relationship between the nature and the product was the main focus of this design. This understanding makes the future of this product very bright.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MA: Design studios and our product designer co-workers, have a great influence on the design process. But this style of design is very unique and it might have already influenced other designs and it can become an approach in the future. Hopefully it will be more welcoming in the industry soon.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MA: Every human who cares about the nature and its own and others health. The users of home and kitchen appliances and etc.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MA: Radix is very unique and completely different from other products.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MA: The name of this product was influenced by historical trees in Persia. The trees that in old age were the symbol of purity.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MA: 2D and 3D software went hand in hand in this process. But the most important designing tool for our group was "Brainstorming". The subject that is still Grey in designing. But it is the most important key to success.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MA: Swallowing air pollution and turning it into clean air in a short amount of time, is the biggest point of this design. The idea that lead CAN's home appliances into build a prototype with the same characteristics.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MA: This was a teamwork project. It was our design group, CAN's department of research and development, and about three technicians worked on the first idea and in the end, one person with the expert knowledge of product design, turned this team effort into its result.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MA: Obviously the main part of this design was the technology of attracting air pollution and turning it into clean air using ionization. Negative ions are beneficial to humans. The most important part was to develop this kind of system, directly using technology.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MA: Laboratory research and library research from studies on trees biology was done by the research department. They researched about trees behavior, from lab plants to function testing was done in about 23 days, and the result was building of the prototype.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MA: Not having any products in the market with similar looks or the function was our first challenge. Knowledge of biological behavior of trees in nature was also influential on the design process.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MA: Attending events like this, is one of the main goals of our team and it is in our work schedule. Usually every year. On the other hand, CAN's home appliances was a great role for us as a sponsor for attending these events.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MA: Studying nature had a lot to teach us and the science of Bionic design encouraged us to learn more about nature. In the process of design, the excited behavior and foreseeing future and technology, gave us a lot to think about.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
MA: In respect to all my co-workers, I would like to gratefully thank, from the Idea development department to the office departments, and also to CAN's home appliances as a great supporter to us and helping us through every step. I would also like to thank the correspondents, for giving us designers a chance. The only time success is made, is when you believe in defeat.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
