Zen Industry Zen by Eric Tam

Home > Winners > Design #43074 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Eric Tam (ET) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Eric Tam by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Zen Industry here.

Interview with Eric Tam at Friday 22nd of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
ET: The main principle of my design is that to bring out the client's belief in Zenism, to create a living space for the client in the Zen way, which is to create harmony at home. The main inspiration came from the first meeting with client as they brought up the idea that they believe in Zenism, and would like their home to be a quiet and peaceful space.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
ET: The main focus of this project is to accentuate the theme which is the Zenism for our client. For example, the combination of material used are iron and wood, especially the stairway, which became the main focal point of the apartment as a whole. Other than that, there is also a fish pond at the bottom of the stairs, which alleviates the industralism that the iron material has brought to the space.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
ET: My future plan for this award winning project is to exhibit at the Macau interior design exhibition in May as well as another exhibition in August. As an interior design firm, we would like our potential clients to know that we are a mutil-award winning firm.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
ET: It took place for two to three months, including the research process, meetings with client and sketching.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
ET: First of all, the homeowner has inspired me to emphasize the Zenism for the home, and client also said that they prefer a modern Zenism living space. Secondly, We were easy to communicate and exchange ideas due to the fact that this was the third time we worked with the client of this specific project. It was almost like designing a home for friends. Thirdly, there is certainly a misleading stereotype of the Chinese interior design style, which is because it is believed that Chinese homes are very traditional looking. However, this project has proved that there are a lot of variations for Chinese interior design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
ET: I do not wish or intend to sell or lease the production rights to any other companies.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
