Interview with Guangchao Wei at Monday 25th of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
GW: Bamboos being as ecological materials have great ecological significance to environmental protection and sustainable development.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
GW: Play the local geographical elements, use the environment-friendly materials, and create an ecological, inexpensive, quickly-built modern space.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
GW: Continue to find more possible about lightweight flexible structures exhibition space.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
GW: Two month.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
GW: Design works that can solve social problems and eco-environmental problems, and design works that can make contribution to human society.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
GW: I intent to produce my work myself.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
GW: My favorite materials are bamboo and reclaimed wood.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
GW: I learn more design knowledge from my tutor.He also gives me many useful guidance. He helps us a lot.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
GW: We focus on the study of ecological and environmental problems, and solve them.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
GW: According to understand the structure contents and the visual space ,it means space transformation and changing possible to some extent.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
GW: Rhino,Measuring Tools, Cutting Tools, grinding tools

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
GW: We focus on the study of ecological and environmental problems, and solve them.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
GW: I collaborate with my classmates for this design.Yes,Because of our limited experience comparing with skilled workers, I am work with people with technical / specialized skills.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
GW: Let all the parts of elements cooperates the whole thing

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
GW: yes,It is.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
GW: Regarding the design of flexible space of bamboos, it is mainly about how to use their excellent properties and how to overcome their existing defects to have a reasonable connection structure and create a lightweight flexible structures exhibition space in a very short period of time through a small number of tools and simple processing methods.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
GW: I hope to show more ideas and share it to friends in the near future.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
GW: We met kinds of unexpected problems from start to finish, under the guidance of tutor, after 2 team members’ co-work and trust, we accomplished the task.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
GW: Not any more.
