Interview with Valentina Lin at Tuesday 19th of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
VS: I always love the colour and black and white and I also love making weird patterns. This collection is inspired by Abstract Black & White and Shedding Skin. Doing the couture technique on the leather give an aggressive look and the combination of black and white make the designs look exclusive and expensive.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
VS: I want to achieve a fierce look, or maybe something strong and dark. I want to have my characteristics in my designs, and I also want someone who has a strong characteristic to wear them.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
VS: If you join a competition, of course you want to win. I just graduated last March, and winning A’Design Award competition will be a great start for me. Maybe I would meet other designers, and make many connections as I could. I believe that people who won this competition must be very talented. And I just can’t stop there, I still have a lot to learn.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
VS: This collection is actually for my graduation fashion show. It took 1 week to develop the idea and 2 months to make it happen. I can’t ask people to make it for me, because the pattern itself is very difficult to understand. In fact, I’m in rush. So everything turned out not as I expected. But I’m planning to re-make everything.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
VS: As for my graduation fashion show, I want people to know what my characteristics. Maybe it’s a little bit weird, but I can’t just make something that is not me. The process is really difficult, but I’m happy with the result.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
VS: I make all my work by myself. It’s never been used before, because it’s not a daily wear. I would like to sell it, but finding people who dare to wear it is difficult.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
VS: Well, I was in rush at that time. I only have 1 week to develop the idea of this collection. It usually took around 1 month for everything. But, the result still satisfying and has my characteristic on it, so I’m not really disappointed.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
VS: No. I design all of it by myself. I only ask people for opinion but at the end, it didn’t change much. Plagiarism is prohibited. I didn’t have time to search for the inspiration, it’s just straight from my brain.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
VS: The target customer for this collection is people who dare to wear them and has a strong characteristic.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
VS: I believe nobody makes the pattern similar as mine. My designs are original. From the colour, fabrics, and the technique were all linked each other to create a fierce look.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
VS: This collection is called #infinitecreativity. It means an unlimited creativity. Make something creative, don’t ever think if it would sell or who wants to wear it. Express yourself.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
VS: I’m using Adobe Illustrator to make the flat drawings. And the rest are just the usual design tools designers use.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
VS: The weird pattern. I love drawing since I was young, especially draw something that didn’t form any particular shape at all. Something abstract. I just draw something weird, random, and something to express myself. If I’m happy, I will make something bright. If I’m sad, I will make something dark and sorrow.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
VS: Like I said before, I made all of these by myself. From developing the idea until the reality.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
VS: I’m using Adobe Illustrator to make the flat drawing. I need to make the flat drawings first before I do the drafting work.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
VS: I just drew random shapes, something abstract. I didn’t do research that much, the ideas just keep coming in.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
VS: The challenge that I faced is on the developing ideas process. My teacher asked me to develop the idea more quickly because of the upcoming deadline. The rest aren’t really matter.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
VS: I love the photoshoot so much, it really reflects my characteristic. It’s so satisfying. I was searching for the competition online and I found A’Design Award. I didn’t do everything just to graduate from college, I need to give myself a chance to move forward.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
VS: Maybe I’ve learned how to develop the ideas in rush? And also my stitching skills improved a lot, because all the designs are difficult to stitch. People gave me advices and some of them are not good, but it would make me a better fashion designer.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
VS: Making this collection is really hard, but it didn’t just make me a better fashion designer, it’s also make me a better person. I’ve learned how to manage time effectively. People’s advices make me to delevop more ideas accurately. You can’t just make something based on your opinion. You have to accept people’s opinion because you’re not selling to yourself, but to other people. Because everyone has a different perspective.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
