Interview with Ray Teng Pai at Thursday 21st of April 2016 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? RP: The inspiration came from tube bending technique wich is vastly used in Taiwanese cars and bicycles manufacture. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? RP: I concentrate at the essence of task lighting, finding the balance between shapes, function and manufacture. Instead of traditional post-base structure setting the light source, I use minimal material and visual element to achieve great function. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? RP: The Linear Lights is already mold testing production stage. It's already been shown in international fairs such as Ambiente Frankfurt, maison&objet Paris and IFFS Singapore. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? RP: Since we are a lean-startup studio, it took more than 24 months in design, refining the mock-up sample, circuit testing, Production line planning ETC. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? RP: Linear Light can be easily assemble by users, which means flat packaging and easy dissembling for recycle. By the minimal structure and material composed, it is friendly to our environment. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? RP: Tube bending is a traditional manufacture technique vastly used in automobile industry, association with the energy saving LED chips and dimming memory circuit we design, we merge vary different technologies into one product. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? RP: We like to introduce great Taiwanese design and manufacture into European market.
