Interview with Jessie W. Fernandez at Thursday 21st of April 2016 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JW: Uni-V was inspired from a traditional tripod with 3 way head. The main idea was to replace the tripod by an innovative and elegant support which offer free and smooth movements while viewing. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JW: The focusing point was to realise an elegant et functional objet. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JW: Upgrade to its packaging and its potential market FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JW: The project started in April 2013. The first prototype was created in July 2013. The first public exhibition took place in September at Cain during the International Boat Show. After some technical improvements, the renewed version was presented at Cain and Paris during the two International boat show in 2014. The latest version was released from 14 to 22 March. 2015 in Nautical French Boat show at La Ciotat. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JW: The main motif was to realise 'something' already realised in mind. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JW: It belongs to VISIMAXI brand under license. Any interesting project will be accepted too. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JW: My core focuses are packaging design and brand development at SICICOM. During our exhibitions, I have many great opportunities to communicate with clients which lead me in this direction and bring out something belongs to them. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JW: The power of simplicity in design. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JW: Modern or contemporary penhouse, properties, houses with panoramic views etc. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JW: Simple and refine... FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JW: UNI-V represents this unique column which unifies the legs of the tripod for Viewing. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JW: Pencil, Pen, Mac FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JW: The inner column with all the important functions FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JW: With participation of Director M. Bernard Fernandez, we collaborate with a professional manufacturer in Yachting field FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JW: Free viewer of binding movements FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JW: Mostly by clients' expressions and experiences FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JW: Perfection! Specially to overcome all the details of the inner column, which should be worked with the concept FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JW: The A'Design Award competition provides a space for me to trace out and write down the design and its whole process which was very motivating for my participation FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JW: Learn to work and work to learn constantly FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? JW: Never give up good Design
