Interview with Florian Freihöfer at Tuesday 28th of April 2015

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
FF: What happens to the space which emerges unintentionally or unconsciously? Does it communicate or interact with its environment? Can I, as a designer, create tasks for these interspaces? I tried to find connections between architecture, art and perception. Who created those spaces? And why are they being created? In my opinion its the point of view as well as our experience.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
FF: It took six months. Three months for research and another three to create a design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
FF: I`ll be selling it on my own. When the product is ready for industrial production, I would like to get it produced.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
FF: Light can create a space but could it connect the user with the object and existence, ensuring change remains a visible part of our life?

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
FF: Yes there are a quite of few designers and friends. We work separatly. Everybody has his own company. There is the photographer (Frank Schinski), a designer (Patrick Frey) and an artist (Carmen M. Cruz). Sometimes we come together and talk about design, art and lifestyle.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
FF: People how want more then just a luminaire. They want a symbiosis between art and light.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
FF: It is simple and tells a story. It was made by hand and every product is unique.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
FF: Vary means: Geometric shapes which use the metamorphosis from angular to round to symbolise transformation. Interaction with the observer is achieved through the lights spatial orbit and the resulting change of form. It creates a connection between the object and existence, ensuring change remains a visible part of our life.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
FF: First a pen and a scrapbook. Than I started my research about spaces in between. After that I used red ropes to make spaces visible. With my camera I took overexposed pictures when I was working in a room to make my moves visible. I opened my mind to explore new ways of design thinking.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
FF: On pictures it appears as if there are different luminaires but in fact it is just a single one. By moving around the luminaire it changes its appearance. With only one line.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
FF: I asked Prof. Paul W. Schmits of lighting design in Hildesheim. He gave me the tip of glass-blowing and neon source. Prof. Andreas Schulz and Dipl.-Des. Hartwig Gerbracht were examiners during my bachelor thesis. Their experience helped me a lot. Thanks for your help!!

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
FF: To connect traditional glass blower work with the new industrial furniture design.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
FF: Oh, I thought one night (I couldn´t sleep) after finishing my work. Come on get out of your comfort zone and get connected with other designers around you. Be part of design.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
FF: Have fun, respect other designers and companions, never stop learning from each other.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
